King George County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 16,803 residents and a population density of 36 people per square kilometer. The county seat is King George .

King George County is located in northeast Virginia, bordering Maryland and has an area of ​​486 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Westmoreland Counties , Essex Counties , Caroline Counties , and Stafford Counties .

history

It was formed in 1721 from parts of Richmond County and Westmoreland County. It was named after George I , King of Great Britain and Ireland . He was the first British monarch of the House of Hanover and spoke hardly any English, but his mother tongue German.
