King George County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 16,803 residents and a population density of 36 people per square kilometer. The county seat is King George .

King George County is located in northeast Virginia, bordering Maryland and has an area of 486 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Westmoreland Counties , Essex Counties , Caroline Counties , and Stafford Counties .
history
It was formed in 1721 from parts of Richmond County and Westmoreland County. It was named after George I , King of Great Britain and Ireland . He was the first British monarch of the House of Hanover and spoke hardly any English, but his mother tongue German.
14 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of May 10, 2018, including Belle Grove , the birthplace of President James Madison .

According to the 2000 census , King George County had 16,803 people in 6,091 households and 4,525 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.69 percent white, 18.73 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 1.01 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.45 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.57 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,091 households, 38.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, 25.7 percent were non-families, 20.4 percent were single households and 6.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.12.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 49,882 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 55,160 US dollars. Males had a median income of $ 38,600 and females $ 26,350. The per capita income was $ 21,562. 4.4 percent of families and 5.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 6.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
