Bath County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 5,048 residents and a population density of 4 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Warm Springs .

Bath County is located in the extreme northwest of Virginia, borders West Virginia to the west and has an area of 1,384 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Highland Counties , Augusta Counties , Rockbridge Counties , and Alleghany Counties .
In 1985, Bath County Pumped Storage Station, the world's most powerful pumped storage power plant, went into operation near the West Virginia border .
history
It was formed on December 14, 1790 from parts of Augusta County and Botetourt County. It was named after the English city of Bath. The first pioneers, mostly of Scottish or Irish descent, settled here as early as 1745. The father of Bath County was John Lewis, here with his wife, Margaret Lynn, moved. Word of the existence of the warm mineral springs quickly got around and the first visitors came around 1750. The first hotel was built in 1766 and around 1800 already 6000 visitors came annually to bathe in the warm springs and hope for the healing effects.

According to the 2000 census , Bath County had 5,048 people in 2,053 households and 1,451 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.29 percent white, 6.28 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,053 households, 28.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.8 percent were single mothers, 29.3 percent were non-families, 26.3 percent were single households, and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.80.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 35,013 , and the median income for a family was $ 41,276. Males had a median income of $ 30,238 versus $ 21,974 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,092. 7.8 percent of the population and 5.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 5.4 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
