York County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 56,297 people and a population density of 206 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Yorktown .

The county is located in eastern Virginia, bounded to the east by Chesapeake Bay and has an area of 558 square kilometers, of which 285 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gloucester County and James City Counties .
history
It was formed in 1634 as Charles River Shire , one of the eight original counties. During the English Civil War (1642–1649) Charles River County, which was named after King Charles I of England , was renamed York County.

York County had a population of 56,297 people as of the 2000 census . 627 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 20,000 households and 15,880 families. The population density was 206 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.00 percent white, 13.38 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 3.25 percent Asian, 0.12 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.00 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.68 percent of the population.
Of the 20,000 households, 42.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 67.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 20.6 percent were non-families, 16.7 percent were single households and 5.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.15.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 57,956 , and the median income for a family is $ 64,892. Males had a median income of $ 42,948 versus $ 28,713 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,560. 2.7 percent of families and 3.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. 3.9 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 3.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
