Lorenzo Buffon (born December 19, 1929 in Majano , Friuli-Venezia Giulia ) is a former Italian football player , he played in the position of goalkeeper .

Buffon was one of the strongest goalkeepers in Italy in the 1950s and early 1960s. He was used in 15 games of the Italian national team, including the 1962 World Cup in Chile . He was also known for his rivalry with Giorgio Ghezzi , another top goalkeeper of the time. Lorenzo Buffon is the cousin of a grandfather of the future Italian national goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon .

Club career

Buffon started his career at a young age with AC Milan . Here he quickly became the goalkeeper and was able to win the Scudetto in his second season in 1950/51 . As a result, he stood in the gate of the Grande Milan in the 1950s, in which the three exceptional Swedish talents Gunnar Gren , Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm were among the top performers. This trio would subsequently become famous under the name Gre-No-Li . This team won the Italian championship in the seasons 1954/55 , 1956/57 and 1958/59 . From the 1956/57 season Buffon was no longer the undisputed number 1 goal of the Milanese. Due to form fluctuations, the substitute goalkeeper Soldan was almost as often used as Buffon. For the 1959/60 season Buffon moved to CFC Genoa . This season was not successful, because in the end the occupied Genoese the 18th and last place in the Serie A , whereby the club in the Serie B relegation. Buffon therefore returned to Milan the following season , this time to Inter Milan , where he was then allowed to guard the gate for three seasons. For the 1963/64 season Buffon moved to Fiorentina , where he was only the substitute goalkeeper and only came to a single use before he ended his career at the end of the season.

National team

On November 9, 1958 Buffon was called up for a game of the Squadra Azzurra for the first time , in this game Italy and France separated (with Just Fontaine ) with a 2-2 draw. Buffon was subsequently able to assert himself as the goalkeeper of the Azzurri , and he was also the captain of the Italian national team for a long time. He also guarded the goal of the Italian selection in the World Cup qualifier on October 15, 1961 against Israel . The hosts surprisingly took the lead with 2-0 goals and only two goals from Mario Corso in the last minutes of the game (87th and 90th minutes) turned the tide. And this despite the well-known teammates such as Cesare Maldini , Giovanni Trapattoni , Bruno Mora , José Altafini and Omar Sívori . His career suffered a major setback at the 1962 World Cup in Chile . Buffon guarded the goal in the group matches against Germany (0-0) and Switzerland (3-0) and was represented by Carlo Mattrel in the "scandal" game against World Cup hosts Chile on June 2nd . The third goalkeeper, Enrico Albertosi , was out of action during the World Cup days in South America. After the disappointing World Cup, he lost his place in the regular formation of the national team and as a result he was used less often at Inter.
