AC Parma

Buffon made his Serie A debut in November 1995 at the age of 17 for AC Parma against AC Milan under Nevio Scala , where he drew 0-0 with his team. In the following period he ousted Luca Bucci, who had been playing in goal up until then, and became a regular goalkeeper. In the 1998/99 season Buffon won the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia with Parma under Alberto Malesani .

Juventus Turin

The 2000/01 season spent Buffon still European in Parma and beat offers from big clubs. It was not until the summer of 2001 that he moved to Juventus Turin for 54.1 million euros . At the time, this represented a record amount for a goalkeeper transfer, which was only outbid in 2018. At Juventus Buffon should succeed the unconvincing Edwin van der Sar . With him, Lilian Thuram moved to Turin , who until then, together with Fabio Cannavaro, was the heart of the stable defense against Buffon.

With Juventus, the goalkeeper under Marcello Lippi immediately won the championship and was even able to defend this title in the following 2002/03 season . He also reached the Champions League final with Juventus Turin in 2003 , which they lost 3-2 on penalties against AC Milan. Buffon was able to celebrate the Scudetto with Juventus again in the 2004/05 season , but this was later revoked due to the manipulation scandal.

On August 14, 2005 Buffon suffered a serious shoulder injury in a clash with Kaká in the preparatory game for the Trofeo Luigi Berlusconi at AC Milan and was out for several months. During this time he was replaced by Christian Abbiati, who came on loan from AC Milan, in the goal of Juventus. At the end of November he was able to report healthy again. In the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal , Buffon played his 50th European game for Juventus. In May 2006, he was suspected of illegally betting on Serie A games. However, Buffon was later found innocent by prosecutors and rehabilitated.

Despite the forced relegation of Juventus Turin for the 2006/07 season to Serie B because of the involvement in the manipulation scandal, Buffon, unlike many other players, did not leave Juventus Turin. With the team trained by Didier Deschamps , he managed to get promoted again immediately. On June 7, 2007, he extended his contract with Juventus until 2012, ending all rumors of change about himself. Less than a year later, his contract was renewed for another year. 2007/08 and 2008/09 Buffon reached with Juventus under Claudio Ranieri in Serie A the ranks three and two respectively. This was followed by two less successful seasons, each of which ended in seventh place.

In the summer of 2011, ex-Juventus captain Antonio Conte , who had played with Buffon until 2004, became the Turin coach. Under Conte Buffon won three Italian championships in a row and conceded the fewest goals of all Serie A clubs as a regular goalkeeper. In September 2012, his contract was extended to the end of 2016.

After three championship titles in three years, but several less successful appearances at European level, Conte resigned from his position as coach at Juventus Turin at the end of the 2013/14 season. His successor was Massimiliano Allegri , who immediately led the club to a double from the championship and Coppa Italia and to the final of the Champions League . On June 6, 2015 , the now 37-year-old Buffon played his second Champions League final against FC Barcelona in Berlin's Olympic Stadium . Juventus lost 3-1.

In May 2016, Buffon extended his contract term with Juventus Turin until June 2018. On November 6, 2016, with the game against Chievo Verona, he became the fourth player to reach 600 Serie A games. In the 2016/2017 Serie A season Juventus Turin became champions, while the Italians lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final .

On May 17, 2018, Buffon announced that he would be leaving Juventus at the end of the 2017/18 season after 17 years. For Juventus he came to a total of 509 league appearances.

Paris Saint-Germain

For the 2018/19 season Buffon moved to the French Ligue 1 to Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a one-year contract with the reigning champions, cup and league cup winners with an option for another season. Under Thomas Tuchel Buffon alternated with Alphonse Aréola in goal. In addition to 17 league games, Buffon played five times in the Champions League , including in two round of 16 games in which PSG were eliminated by Manchester United . With PSG he won the Supercup and the championship.

Return to Juventus

For the season 2019/20 returned back to Buffon Juventus. He signed a contract running until the end of the season and is scheduled as a substitute goalkeeper behind Wojciech Szczęsny . Then he should take on another task in the club. At the end of September, Buffon overtook Paolo Maldini, the Italian player with the most professional appearances at club level, when he made his second appearance for Juventus after his return in defeating SPAL Ferrara . On December 15, 2019, Buffon played in his 700th league game across clubs when he stood between the posts in the 3-1 win against Udinese Calcio . On June 29, 2020, he extended his contract for another year until the end of June 2021. On July 4, 2020, Buffon replaced Paolo Maldini as the record player in Serie A in a 4-1 home win against Turin with his 648th appearance .

At the 1998 World Cup in France , he was part of the Italian squad , but was not used.

At the EM 2000 Buffon rose to the goalkeeper of the national team, but could not take part in the finals due to a broken thumb. His substitute Francesco Toldo showed good performance there and challenged him for the position in goal. Buffon was subsequently able to prevail and was number one in the Italian goal until 2018.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany denied Buffon as the goalkeeper of Marcello Lippi assisted Squadra Azzurra . He showed impeccable performance and could not be defeated by any opposing player from the game during the entire tournament. There the Italian team under Cesare Prandelli was able to qualify after victories against England , when he was able to parry a shot on penalties, and Germany qualified for the final against Spain , which was lost 4-0.

At the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup , Buffon and Italy reached the game for third place against Uruguay , which ended 2-2 after extra time and had to be decided on penalties. There he was able to save three penalties, making Italy third. On September 10, 2013 Buffon put the 2: 1 win over the Czech Republic with his 136th international match the record of Fabio Cannavaro and qualified the same time as his team ahead for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . With another use in the international match against Denmark on October 11, 2013, he became the sole Italian national record player.

Buffon was Italy's number one at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the first group game against England he was represented by Salvatore Sirigu due to an injury , in the other two group games he was captain in goal. After the game against Uruguay (0-1), he was elected Man of the Match , although the Italian national team was eliminated in the preliminary round due to this defeat.

Trivia

Buffon has come under fire in the past for his use of right-wing extremist symbolism. During his time at AC Parma, he showed a T-shirt with the fascist slogan “Boia chi molla” (“Whoever gives up be hanged”), for which he ended up in front of the sports association's disciplinary committee. He caused a lot of excitement again when he wanted to play with the number 88 shirt. The number 88 is considered a key right-wing extremist symbol . Buffon, however, was ignorant: “I took the 88 because it has four eggs. And you need eggs in football, ”was his explanation. “Who suspects that behind this number is the Hitler salute ?! Surely only Nazis know that! ”Buffon said, surprised.

Buffon took over the largest football club in his hometown, Carrarese Calcio , in 2010 together with Cristiano Lucarelli and other owners . Since July 7th, 2012 he is the sole owner of the club.

In 2018, the goalkeeper became a tank commander as part of the World of Tanks partnership program. He made his picture and voice available to Wargaming.net for the Italian occupation. During the event, 58,806 players had completed the task and then Buffon was available as a crew member for one of their tanks.
