Nevio Scala (born November 22, 1947 in Lozzo Atestino , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and coach . He has been President of Parma Calcio since June 30, 2015 .

Life

As an active, Nevio Scala was active as a midfielder for several Italian clubs between 1966 and 1981. He played for AS Roma , AC Milan , Vicenza Calcio , Inter Milan , US Foggia and AC Monza Brianza in the Serie A .

In 1968 he won both the championship with AC Milan and the final against Hamburger SV in the European Cup Winners' Cup that same year . The following year he won the European Cup with Milan , but was not in the final against Ajax Amsterdam .

In the late 1980s, Scala began his career as a football coach. His first coaching success was the rise of Reggina Calcio to Serie B in 1988/89 . From 1989 to 1996 he worked at AC Parma . With the club he won the 1992 Italian Cup against Juventus Turin , and the following year the European Cup Winners' Cup in London with 3-1 against Royal Antwerp . In 1995 he won the UEFA Cup with the club, which was sponsored by the milk company Parmalat at the time, and met Juventus Turin again in the finals.

In the 1996/97 season he coached AC Perugia . In the following season he was signed by the reigning Champions League winner Borussia Dortmund as the successor to Ottmar Hitzfeld after Hitzfeld had switched from the coaching bench to the position of sports director. With the club he won the World Cup in Tokyo in November 1997 against the title holder of the Copa Libertadores , Cruzeiro EC from Belo Horizonte, Brazil . In the Champions League, Dortmund were eliminated from the subsequent winners Real Madrid under their coach Jupp Heynckes . The game in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium got a dubious reputation due to the Madrid turf fall . Nationally, Borussia finished tenth at the end of the season, the collaboration with Scala was then discontinued.

Between 2000 and 2001 Scala worked for the Turkish association Beşiktaş Istanbul . In February 2002 he was signed by the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk . With Shakhtar, who won the national cup competition four times in the Soviet era, he won the double of the championship and the cup by May of that year, which meant the first two national titles for the club from the mining town since the independence of Ukraine . In September Schachtar lost 5-1 in the first round of the UEFA Cup at FK Austria Wien , which led to Scala resigning.

In 2004 he coached Spartak Moscow , which was his last coaching position. Scala has been a commentator for the Italian radio broadcaster Radiouno ( RAI 1) since then .

On June 30, 2015, Scala took over the presidency of the newly founded club Parma Calcio .
