Torfall of Madrid is characterized by media reports designation for an incident on 1 April 1998 before the kickoff of the semi-final game of the UEFA Champions League in the 1997/98 season between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium . A goal that fell over delayed the start of the game by 76 minutes.

The commentators from RTL , Marcel Reif and Günther Jauch , received the Bavarian TV Prize 1998 for their humorous moderation to bridge the waiting time .

Initial situation and peat fall

Borussia Dortmund was to play the first leg of the semi-final against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on April 1, 1998 as the reigning Champions League winner in 1997. Before the start of the game, Spanish fans had climbed the protective fence behind one of the goals. As a result, the fence buckled at 8:43 p.m. in the direction of the grandstands and tore the gate attached to it with it.

The game should have started at 8:45 pm; this was not possible because of the fallen gate. Players and coaches had to leave the field again. It took more than an hour for a new goal to be brought into the stadium and set up - from Real Madrid's training ground in a van with the help of fans. After checking by the referee , the game started 76 minutes late. Borussia Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid and decided not to appeal to UEFA . The second leg in Dortmund ended goalless and Dortmund was eliminated. Real then won the final 1-0 against Juventus Turin .

Moderation

The game was broadcast live for Germany by RTL Television . Before the whistle kicked off, Marcel Reif initially moderated the game until Günther Jauch was switched on to bridge the waiting time. Since it was not clear whether RTL was allowed to broadcast TV advertising and how long the game would be postponed, both moderators tried to entertain the TV viewers. According to Reif, the following sentence was one of the most beautiful he'd ever managed:

"Never before would a goal have done a game so good."

"For all those who did not switch on in time, [...] the first goal has already been scored!"

Both Jauch and Reif were awarded the Bavarian Television Prize for this live broadcast in the same year and were nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize in 1999. The audience ratings during the mishap amounted to around 12.76 million viewers, the actual game only saw around 6 million viewers.
