At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Italian squad . Only in the third group game against Ireland, in which some players were paused and that was no longer of great importance, did he move up into the starting line-up. But then he also played the last sixteen and quarter-finals for the full season. Against Germany, the team had to go to penalties and as the eighth penalty taker in his country, he converted. Then Italy missed a penalty and was eliminated.
