Beginnings

Higuaín was born in Brest, France . His father Jorge Higuaín was active as a player at Stade Brest at the time . His parents moved with him to Argentina when he was ten months old. There he began playing football and was accepted into the youth team of the Argentine top club River Plate . Until the end of 2006 Higuain played for River Plate, where he was placed in the attack, but also in the attacking midfield.

In the summer of 2006 there was much speculation that the youngster would move to one of Europe's top clubs. Among other things, Liverpool FC was interested in him. In December of the same year he signed a contract with Real Madrid . This originally ran until June 2013. The transfer fee was 13 million euros.

real Madrid

Gonzalo Higuaín's breakthrough came in the 2008/09 season , in which he scored 22 league goals for Real Madrid. With this performance, the offensive all-rounder was fifth on the top scorer list in Spain. In the 2009/10 season he scored 27 times and finished second in the scorers' list in the Spanish championship behind Lionel Messi . At the end of the season extended Higuaín his contract with the Royal prematurely by three years to June 2016th

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Higuaín was in the first twelve league games in the starting line-up and scored seven goals. In December 2010, he was diagnosed with a herniated disc that required surgery and a four-month forced break. In April 2011, Higuaín celebrated its comeback. He finished the season with 17 league games and ten goals.

The 2011/12 season began Higuaín as a substitute, as coach José Mourinho entrusted the attack position to Karim Benzema , who had been able to collect points during Higuaín's absence in the preseason. On the sixth game day he played a league game from the start and promptly scored eight goals in the following four games, including two hat-tricks against Espanyol Barcelona and Betis Sevilla . He then shared the attack position with his French teammate. He played a total of 35 league games during the season and scored 22 goals in 18 starting eleven. He won the Spanish championship for the third time with Real Madrid.

In the 2012/13 season , Higuaín scored his 100th goal in the Primera División on February 23, 2013 in the 179th game . He finished the season with 16 goals in 28 league games. At the end of the season, he announced his departure from Real Madrid after six and a half years of club membership.

For the 2013/14 season moved Higuaín for around 40 million euros for Napoli in the Serie A . He signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2018.

For the 2016/17 season , Higuaín moved to league rivals Juventus Turin , with whom he signed a five-year contract, for 90 million euros , the most expensive transfer in history within Serie A and one of the most expensive transfers worldwide .

After Juventus Turin signed Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2018/19 season , Higuaín moved to AC Milan for a loan fee of 18 million euros, initially on loan for one year . Then AC Milan had the option to acquire the transfer rights to Higuaín for 36 million euros. At Milan , Higuaín had 15 Serie A appearances until January 2019, in which he scored six goals.

Chelsea FC

On January 23, 2019, the agreement between Juventus Turin and AC Milan was terminated. At the same time, Higuaín moved to the Premier League for Chelsea on loan until the end of the 2018/19 season . For 18 million euros, Chelsea was then able to extend the loan for a year; there was also an option to acquire the transfer rights for EUR 36 million. Higuaín came under the head coach Maurizio Sarri , under whom he had already played in Naples, by the end of the season on 14 Premier League appearances, in which he scored five goals. He was also used once in the Europa League , which Chelsea won against Arsenal . After the season, Higuaín left the club next to Sarri for Juventus Turin.

Return to Juventus

For the 2019/20 season , Higuaín returned to Juventus Turin.

National team

Higuaín does not speak French , but since he was born in France , he has both Argentinean and French citizenship . In November 2006 he was nominated by the French national coach Raymond Domenech for a game of the national team against Greece , but turned down a use because he preferred to play for Argentina. On October 10, 2009, he made his debut in the national team of Argentina against Peru .

As expected, he was nominated for the 2010 World Cup . In the second group game of the Argentine selection he scored three goals in a 4-1 win against South Korea . In the second round against Mexico , he scored the interim 2-0 (final score 3-1). In the quarter-finals he failed with Argentina against Germany .

Four years later he took part in the 2014 World Cup. In qualifying, Lionel Messi with ten and Higuaín with nine goals were the second and third best goal scorers of CONMEBOL. Argentina had qualified as group winners. Higuaín was on the pitch in each of the seven Argentine games and scored the winning goal against Belgium in the quarter-finals (here he was also voted Man of the Match ). In the final his team lost to Germany. Nevertheless, this participation by Argentina was the best performance in a World Cup tournament since 1990.

In 2015, Higuain reached the final of the 2015 Copa America with Argentina . He had scored two goals during the tournament. Argentina lost the final on penalties. Here Higuaín missed one of the penalties.

He was part of the national team of Argentina for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. There the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual world champions France .

In March 2019, Higuaín announced his retirement from the national team. He completed his 75th and last appearance on June 26, 2018 in the last group game of the World Cup. In total, Higuaín scored 31 goals.
