The game was a balanced, not always high-class and sometimes tough exchange of blows. Germany's style of play was geared towards possession and control of the game, while Argentina mostly presented their attacks in quick counterattacks and thus initially had better scoring opportunities. Gonzalo Higuaín alone missed three opportunities to take the lead in the first half hour of the game. The first in the fourth minute he twisted it from an acute angle. In the 21st minute he intercepted a return header from Toni Kroos , but shot the ball to the left of the German goal , undisturbed and only goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in front of him. In the 30th minute, Higuaín hit from close range after a pass from Ezequiel Lavezzi . However, this hit was not counted due to the shooter's offside position . Christoph Kramer had previously collided with Ezequiel Garay in the Argentine penalty area in the 17th minute . That he had suffered a concussion including memory loss became clear when he asked referee Nicola Rizzoli whether he was in the World Cup final. He was then replaced by André Schürrle in the 31st minute . In the 36th minute, Schürrle shot on goal after a pass from Thomas Müller . The Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero was able to parry the shot; a goal would not have counted because of Mesut Özil's offside position , who blocked Romero's view. In return, Lionel Messi had already overcome Neuer in the 40th minute, but Jérôme Boateng was able to clear the back pass to Lavezzi. At the end of the first half, Benedikt Höwedes missed the best German chance to date when he hit the right post with a header from a Kroos corner.

At the beginning of the second half Sergio Agüero came into play for Lavezzi to reinforce the Argentine offensive , while the German team initially waived further changes. Messi missed the German goal in the 47th minute when his shot just missed the right post. A hard entry by Neuer in the 56th minute against Higuaín on the German penalty area border was not punished by the referee Rizzoli. After that, the game was mostly characterized by playful inaccuracies and ball losses on both sides. In the 80th minute, Kroos moved the ball to the right of the Argentine goal after a back pass from Mesut Özil . Miroslav Klose , who had advanced to become the top scorer in the World Cup , was substituted in the 88th minute. For him came Mario Götze , who failed to hit the ball properly in stoppage time when attempting a shot from a central position around 20 meters away from the goal, so Romero could pick it up without any problems. This left the goalless draw at the end of regular time.

In the first minute of extra time, Romero parried a Schürrle shot from close range. Six minutes later, the substitute for Higuaín Rodrigo Palacio placed a ball that Mats Hummels had undermined in front of Neuer as a lob left of the German goal. In the second half of extra time, Bastian Schweinsteiger suffered a bleeding laceration under his right eye in a duel with Agüero in the 108th minute of the game . The Argentine, who had been charged with a yellow card since the 65th minute , escaped dismissal ; Schweinsteiger continued the game after team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt clamped the wound on the edge of the field .

In the 113th minute, the German team took the lead. After a pass from Toni Kroos from the center line, André Schürrle started a push to the baseline of the Argentine half of the pitch on the left German side at the height of the center circle. Pressed by Javier Mascherano and Pablo Zabaleta , he hit a cross to the side of the Argentine penalty area over Martín Demichelis to the left corner of the five-meter area , where Mario Götze had run free. Götze jumped towards the ball, took it with his chest and shot it with a twisting shot with his left foot into the long corner of the Argentine goal. Sergio Romero had speculated on a shot in the near corner.

After the 1-0 win, Argentina increased the pressure on the German goal, but could no longer equalize. The last good scoring opportunity missed Messi in the third minute of stoppage time of extra time when the score with a free kick from about 25 meters over the German goal curled . Rizzoli whistled the game about a minute later after a foul by Zabaleta on Schweinsteiger.

For Germany it was the first World Cup title win since reunification , the first in extra time to a World Cup final and, after losing to England in 1966, the second World Cup final that was decided in extra time. The German team was the first to win the FIFA World Cup trophy, which has been awarded since 1974, for the third time . After the victories in the 1990 World Cup final and in the two quarter-finals at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, it was the fourth German tournament victory in a row against Argentina. By winning the final, the German team took the lead in the FIFA world rankings with 1724 points, ahead of Argentina (1606 points) and the Netherlands (1496 points). In the alternative ranking of the World Football Elo Ratings , the final victory ensured that Germany achieved the highest number of points ever recorded there with 2223 points.

Apart from the result, Germany also had statistical advantages over Argentina. According to FIFA information, the DFB-Elf were ahead with shots on goal (7: 2) and corners (5: 3) and had 60% more possession than the Albiceleste . In contrast, the BBC recorded a ratio of 5: 0 shots on goal and a possession ratio of 64: 36% for Germany.

Miroslav Klose for Germany and Lucas Biglia for Argentina were the only players from the opposing national teams playing in the final who were working for the same club, specifically for Lazio , at club level at the time of the final . In Germany, Bayern Munich had the largest contingent of players with seven players (Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Schweinsteiger, Müller, Kroos and Götze) and in Argentina, Manchester City with three players (Demichelis, Zabaleta, Agüero). In Germany the players used came from a total of seven (Bayern Munich, Lazio Rome, Borussia Dortmund , Schalke 04 , Borussia Mönchengladbach , FC Chelsea and FC Arsenal ), in Argentina from ten clubs (Manchester City, Lazio Rome, FC Barcelona , AS Monaco , Benfica Lisbon , Sporting Lisbon , Paris Saint-Germain , SSC Napoli , Inter Milan and CA Boca Juniors ).

Mario Götze was the first substitute to score the winning goal in a World Cup final.
