Counterattack (sport)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A counterattack is the name for a special situation and the resulting action, mostly in ball games . The prerequisite is that a game party (team or individual player) exerts a form of superiority or dominance on the opponent and thus determines the game. If this player makes a mistake and the opponent, previously intent on defense, suddenly takes the initiative and uses the element of surprise in his favor, it is called a counterattack. The counterattackers benefit from the fact that the former attacker is not prepared for the new situation, that is, he encounters the counterattack in a disorderly manner because his actions were previously aimed at attacking. This makes the situation more dangerous for him than that of an orderly defensive action.

A counterattack is not a special feature that has to be defined in rules , but part of the regular course of the game. Since a counterattack relatively often leads to point or goal decisions depending on the sport, counterattacking is a possible game strategy.
