Rules of the game

The game rules define the number of participants, requirements and the course of games . Often it is in printed form with the games to be purchased, or it is passed on orally or determined by the game master.

Content of rules of the game

  • Number, age, position (e.g. sitting in a circle) of the players
  • Requirements and arrangement of the game parts at the start of the game
  • Order and character of the actions of the participants
  • Game objective and conditions for the end of the game
  • Valuation bases

For some games ( e.g. Don't get angry , Doppelkopf, etc.) there are a number of variants, so it may be necessary to agree on the application of individual rules before starting the game.

Special rules of the game

  • Games of the Nomic type explicitly allow the game rules to be changed by the players. These are self-referential games.
  • The aim of some games is to first find out the rules of the game, known only to the captain , through trial and error . Example: "Eleusis" or "New Eleusis" by Robert Abbott .

Phrase

The term rule of the game is also used outside of a game framework. Often one speaks of compliance with the rules of the game when one wants to show that someone is adhering to the usual customs in a field or an institution (democracy, diplomacy, company, etc.).
