The 9.0 km² municipal area covers a section of the Molasse hill country between the river valleys of Saane and Sense . The area is bounded in the west by the Lettiswilbach, which flows northward in a wide valley to the Taverna . From this valley low, the municipality extends east over the undulating hill country with the heights of Hubel ( 752  m above sea level ), Chapfholz ( 797  m above sea level ) and Magdalenaholz (at 822  m above sea level the highest elevation of Heitenried) to the Sense in the area of the confluence of the Sodbach . The scythe flows here in a ditch cut deep into the molasse layers of the surrounding area and has steep slopes up to 100 m high, partly interspersed with sandstone rocks. Until the second half of the 20th century, Heitenried was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, dairy farming , cattle breeding , arable farming and fruit growing have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Wood construction, construction, IT, mechanical workshops and cheese dairies are based in Heitenried. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Friborg and Bern regions.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on the main road from Freiburg via Schwarzenburg to Thun . The road leads steeply into the Sensetobel, where it crosses the river on the modern Sodbach bridge, next to which the historic wooden bridge from 1876 has been preserved, one quarter each of which is in the municipal area of Heitenried and St. Antoni.

Heitenried is connected to the public transport network by the TPF bus lines , which serve the routes from Freiburg to Schwarzenburg and from Schmitten to Schwarzenburg.

history

The municipality of Heitenried was settled very early, which was proven by the finds of burial mounds from the Hallstatt period in Magdalena wood as well as individual remains of the Roman road that led from Freiburg to Schwarzenburg.

Based on the community name, it is assumed that Heitenried was founded in the 10th or 11th century by the Alemanni (derived from the personal name Heito ). The place was first mentioned in a document in 1228 under the French name of Essers . The German version of Riede has been handed down from 1296. Both names have the meaning of clearing a forest.

In the Middle Ages , Heitenried formed its own small lordship, which came into the possession of the Counts of Thierstein in the 14th century. In 1442 the village came under the rule of Freiburg through purchase and was assigned to the Old Landscape (Aupanner). To the battle of Murten in 1476, Heitenried and Vyler sent a "travel company (company)" of 37 equipped men in front of Holtz according to the Friborg contingent.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Heitenried belonged to the district of Freiburg during the Helvetic and the following period and from 1831 to the German district of Freiburg, before it was incorporated into the then newly created Sense district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

Attractions

The parish of Heitenried has been mentioned since 1228. The parish church of St. Michael was given its present form when it was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style between 1904 and 1905. It has a rich interior . The village is dominated by a castle , which was built in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Diesbach-Steinbrugg family on the site of a medieval castle and is now used as a school house.

There are chapels in several hamlets, namely the Mauritius chapel in Wiler vor Holz, the Nikolaus or Nothelferkapelle in Selgiswil and the Joseph chapel in Schönfels, which is decorated with figures from the 17th century from the parish church of Tafers .

In the hamlets in the municipality, characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.

The section of the Way of St. James leads from Schwarzenburg to Freiburg through Heitenried .
