St. Antoni (emphasis on the "o"; French Saint-Antoine ; Friborg patois ) is a municipality in the Sense district of the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . Until 1860 it was officially called Schrickschrot , after the name of the main settlement in which the parish church is located.
geography
The municipality of St. Antoni is a scattered settlement with many hamlets and farms. These include Niedermuhren , Obermonten (also called Obermontenach or Montagny-Dessus ), Schweni and St. Antoni .
The parish church located on a hill forms the center of the settlement at about 715 m above sea level. M. The highest point is the Chutz with 884 m above sea level. M. , lowest point of the Ledeubach below Tutzishaus at the mouth of the Muhrenbach at 615 m above sea level. M.
The municipality covers 16.68 km², which makes St. Antoni the fourth largest municipality in the Sense district in terms of area. The village of St. Antoni itself stands on the edge of the branched area.
The community borders along the Sense , from Sodbach to Schwenny for 4 km on the canton of Bern . The area rising towards the south extends from the colline to the pre-alpine zone. The vegetation is correspondingly diverse.
Neighboring communities of St. Antoni are Alterswil , Heitenried , Schmitten , Tafers , Ueberstorf and Wünnewil-Flamatt .
coat of arms
- Divided by gold with a growing black Antonite cross, hung with two black bells and blue with three silver rings
The municipal coat of arms was introduced in 1925 as a result of an error. For twenty years it was still believed that the Freiburg mayor Jean Gambach had founded the Antonius Chapel on the Schrick, which is why the Gambach family coat of arms was given the place in the lower half of the coat of arms. Schultheiss Gambach was actually the owner of an Antonius Chapel - but in the capital Freiburg, where the university is today. The Gambach Foundation has no relationship with the 16th century chapel in St. Antoni. The three silver rings of the Gambach have been preserved on the coat of arms. The congregation rightly carries the staff with the two bells of Saint Anthony. Anthony was revered as the patron saint of domestic animals. Because his animal was especially the pig, welfare for the poor had pigs kept during the Middle Ages. They could walk around freely and wear bells as identification. Before the feast of their patron saint, they were slaughtered and the meat distributed to the poor.
history
Up until 1447 there was no settlement on the site of today's village center. It was only built around the Antonius Chapel, which was built after the victory of the Freiburgers over the Bernese in 1448. From the middle of the 16th century, the name of the chapel was carried over to the place itself.
Today's parish once belonged to the parish of Tafers and thus to the old landscape . The place on which the church is built is called Schrick , which means steep . With the division of the old parish, St. Antoni became an independent political community in 1831/32. In 1848, with the new cantonal constitution, St. Antoni was incorporated into the then newly created Sense district.
population
With the revision of the building regulations in 1994, the number of inhabitants also increased. Construction activity was particularly evident in Lampertshalten, Burgbühl, Niedermonten and Niedermuhren. In 1990 the federal census found 1762 inhabitants. On December 31, 2018, 2076 people were already living in the community.
economy
The community is traditionally characterized by agriculture. More than 90 farms cultivate 1,372 hectares of land as full or sideline, whereby the dairy industry plays the most important role depending on the altitude and vegetation. Because of the long distances, there are also three cheese dairies in Niedermuhren, Schweni and St. Antoni, in which 16 tons of milk are processed every day. In Obermonten there is a milk collection point which the Cremo company in Villars-sur-Glâne supplies.
In recent times, commercial, industrial and service companies have settled. Despite this increase in jobs, St. Antoni remains a typical commuter community.
traffic
St. Antoni is located between Tafers and Heitenried on the main road from Friborg to Schwarzenburg in the canton of Bern.
post Office
Until 1860 the few letters in St. Antoni were distributed in front of the church by a country hunter (police officer) on Sundays . If he couldn't deliver a letter, he put it in his pocket again for a week. The first mail deposit box was opened in 1865 by post holder Johann Fasel. It was located in the old Sigristenhaus until 1899, which over time proved to be too small and impractical. After the transformation into a post office in 1909, this was moved to the newly built parish hall in 1912. Because the premises were becoming too cramped due to the steadily increasing traffic, the Post moved into a building next to the inn in 1937 and into a new chalet-style building in 1946. Post remained in the hands of the same relatives for over a century: Johann was succeeded by Ulrich Fasel, and in 1911 by his nephew Christophe Müller, whose family ran the position until 1986. When the Raiffeisenbank felt the need for more space in addition to the post office, they built a new development with shops and apartments, the “Santonihus”, inaugurated in 1983. Since then there has been a post office integrated in the village shop in the same building.

Louis de Buman had the chapel rebuilt. On May 26, 1846, Bishop Stephan Marilley blessed the chapel in honor of Mary, Mother of Providence and the Trinity.
Burgbühl education center
Today's Burgbühl Education Center was built between 1929 and 1931 and served as a novitiate for the Kanisius Sisters and as a retreat house in the following years .
On March 14, 1967, Svetlana Iossifovna Allilueva , daughter of the Soviet dictator at the time, Josef Stalin , was brought to the nuns in the house of today's education center. Half the world was looking for her, but no one was waiting for her in St. Antoni. On April 3, 1967, Svetlana Iossifowna Allilujewa was brought to the Visitantinnenkloster in Freiburg. On April 21, 1967, Stalin's daughter left Switzerland for New York.
Since 1972 it has been the Catholic education center for the German Friborg region. Together with the Viktor-Schwaller-Haus, which was rebuilt in 1987, it offers rooms and options for different groups and needs. A large park adorns the turnaround of the education center.
