The place was founded by Alemannic settlers between the 9th and 10th centuries. The oldest surviving documentary mention dates back to the year 1201. The Romanesque name at that time was Tentenens . The German names Tintingen (1363), Tnten (1449) and Tentlingen (1466) appeared later , while the French versions Tenterens (1445) and Tenterin (1861) have survived. The place name probably goes back to the Germanic personal name Tanto or Dandil and means with the suffix -ingen as much as with the people of Tanto / Dandil .

In the Middle Ages , Tentlingen belonged to the Counts of Thierstein . In 1442 at the latest, the village came under the rule of Freiburg through purchase and was assigned to the Old Landscape (Burgpanner). Since the 16th century, the Magerau monastery had rich property in the area of Tentlingen. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the district of Freiburg during the Helvetic and the following period and from 1831 to the German district of Freiburg, before it was incorporated into the newly created Sense district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. Tentlingen belonged to the parish of Giffers until 1831, and since then it has formed an independent political community.
