Villarsel-sur-Marly ( Freiburger Patois Vèrlachi ? / I ) is a municipality in the District de la Sarine (German: Saanebezirk) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The former German names Willischert and Villarsel ob Mertenlach are no longer used today. Audio file / audio sample

geography

Villarsel-sur-Marly is 736  m above sea level. M. , 6 km south of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The scattered settlement community extends on a slope inclined to the north above the valley of the Ärgera (French: Gérine), in the pre-Alpine hill zone of the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 1.4 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the pre-alpine hilly landscape east of the Saanegraben . The northern border runs in parts along the river of the Ärgera; in the east the area is bounded by its left tributary Nesslerabach . From the valleys, the municipality extends southward over a steep forest slope to the height near Villarsel and above the farmstead reaches La Rochette at 761  m above sea level. With 84 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Villarsel-sur-Marly is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Friborg. 89.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 6.8% German-speaking and 4.0% speak Italian (as of 2000). The population of Villarsel-sur-Marly was 87 in 1900. After a peak in 1940 with 95 inhabitants, the population decreased by over 50% to 46 people by 1980 due to strong emigration. Only since then has there been significant population growth again.

Villarsel-sur-Marly still lives from agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding . In recent years the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

history

In the Middle Ages, Villarsel-sur-Marly was under the rule of Arconciel. The Johanniter in Freiburg also owned land in the municipality. In 1442 at the latest, Villarsel-sur-Marly came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the Old Landscape (Burgpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the La Roche district during the Helvetic period and to the Friborg district from 1803 before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

In Villarsel-sur-Marly there is a prestigious estate that was built between 1729 and 1733.
