La Brillaz is a municipality in the District de la Sarine (German: Saanebezirk) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The municipality of La Brillaz was created on January 1, 2001 through the merger of the formerly independent municipalities of Lentigny , Lovens and Onnens . The seat of the municipal administration is Lentigny.

geography

La Brillaz is located around 12 km west-southwest of the canton capital of Friborg (as the crow flies). The municipality extends on the Molasse plateau between the Broye plain in the northwest and the Glânetal in the south, in the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 10.3 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse Heights of the Freiburg Central Plateau. The central part of the municipality is taken up by the wide ridge La Brillaz , which is 773  m above sea level. M. forms the highest point of the municipality and on which the district Lovens is located. On the northern slope of this ridge is the La Buchille forest . To the south of the ridge there is a slightly undulating, partly boggy high plateau at an average height of 725  m above sea level. M. , which includes largely open meadow and pasture land, but also the forests of Les Boennes and Les Possessions . To the east, this plateau is drained by the Bagne stream towards the Glâne. To the southwest, the parish extends over the saddle of Lentigny to the forests of Combertin and Bois des Gottes ( 760  m above sea level ). This area is drained north to the Arbogne . In 1997, 7% of the municipal area was in settlements, 19% in forests and woodlands, 73% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

La Brillaz consists of the villages Lentigny ( 720  m above sea level ), Lovens ( 767  m above sea level ) and Onnens ( 719  m above sea level ) as well as a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities to La Brillaz are Prez , Avry , Neyruz , Cottens , Autigny , Chénens , Villaz and Torny .

With 2046 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), La Brillaz is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. 93.3% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.2% German-speaking and 0.5% speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of the localities of La Brillaz was 823 in 1900. After a peak in 1940 with 907 inhabitants, a population decrease of 17% to 755 people was observed by 1970. Since then, the population has grown rapidly again.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, La Brillaz was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, the have farming , the fruit production , the dairy industry and animal husbandry an important role in the employment structure of the population. Other jobs are available in the local small business and in the service sector, including in a construction company, in a stone slab company, in fish farming and in a joinery. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

The community is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Chénens to Avry . All three villages of La Brillaz are connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus route from Freiburg to Lentigny.

history

The municipality of La Brillaz was settled very early. There was a settlement near Lentigny during Roman times . During excavations, a mosaic floor and numerous fragments of ceramics and iron goods were found.

The villages of La Brillaz belonged to the Montagny domain in the Middle Ages . They came under the rule of Freiburg through purchase in 1442 and were assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the villages of La Brillaz belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before they were incorporated into the Saane district with the new cantonal constitution in 1848.

As part of the community mergers funded by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Lentigny , Lovens and Onnens decided to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2001, the new municipality of La Brillaz was therefore formed.
