geography

Ependes is 750  m above sea level. M. , 6 km south of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The village extends in a promising location on a promontory on the northern slope of the Bois d'Amont , east of the Saanegraben in the pre-Alpine hill area, in the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 5.6 km² municipality covers a section of the higher Freiburg Central Plateau near the northern edge of the Alps. The area is drained by the Ruisseau de Copy with its two source streams to the north to the Ärgera (French: Gérine). The municipality soil extends from the southern side of the valley of Ärgera with the forest heights Bois de Monteynan and Vers le Bois ( 739  m above sea level. M. ) southward over a small plateau and gently rising slope of Ependes up on the hill Bois d'Amont on the one with 863  m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached, and in the valley of Senèdes. With 1089 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Ependes is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. 87.7% of the residents speak French, 9.3% speak German and 0.5% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Ependes was 606 in 1900. Over the course of the 20th century, the population decreased by over 20% to 479 people by 1960. Since then there has been a significant increase in population combined with a doubling of the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Ependes was a predominantly agricultural village. There used to be a mill at Copy. Even today, the have farming , the fruit production , the dairy industry and animal husbandry an important role in the employment structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in metal construction and window manufacturing companies. Ependes has had an observatory since 1977. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

history

The municipality of Ependes was settled early on, as evidenced by the remains of the foundations of a Roman estate. Numerous finds from the 1st century AD were unearthed here.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1142 under the name Spindis . Later the names Espindes (1163), Ispindes , Espinnes (1174), Espindis (1180), Pindes (1198), Spindes (1251), Espines , Espignes (1354) and Spins (1356) appeared. The place name is derived from the Latin word spinas (thistle).

Since the Middle Ages, Ependes formed its own small lordship, which was subordinate to the Lords of Arconciel as a fief. After the noble family von Ependes died out, there were numerous changes of ownership. The Abbey of Hauterive also had rich property in the municipality. In 1442 at the latest, Ependes came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the Old Landscape (Burgpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the La Roche district during the Helvetic period and to the Friborg district from 1803 before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. On January 1, 1977 the previously independent parish of Sales was incorporated into Ependes.

Attractions

The Saint-Etienne church has been mentioned since 1417; it was extensively restored in the 17th century and burned down in 1933. The new building dates from 1935. There are several country estates in the Ependes area, including the Castle de Lanther, the manor d'Odet and the country estate Wild, all from the 17th century.
