geography

Ecuvillens is 692  m above sea level. M. , eight kilometers southwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The street village extends on a plateau between the valleys of the Glâne in the west and the Saane in the east, in the Molasse hills of the Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 5.3 km². The area comprised the gently undulating plateau of Ecuvillens, which is bordered in the west and north by the valley of the Glâne, cut deep into the molasse layers, and in the east by the Saanegraben. In the southwest it reached over the height of Grossa Faita ( 722  m above sea level. M. ) in the extensive forest area Bois Cornard .

population

With 710 inhabitants (2000), Ecuvillens was one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. In 1850 the village had 443 inhabitants, in 1900 523 inhabitants. Since 1960 (448 inhabitants) there has been a significant increase in population. The hamlet of Le Faubourg ( 695  m above sea level ) on the plateau south of the village and several individual farms belong to Ecuvillens .

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Ecuvillens was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Ecuvillens has been the location of the Ecuvillens airfield since 1949 . In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

traffic

The community has good transport links. It is located next to the old main road from Freiburg to Bulle . The next connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey), which crosses the municipality, is around 4 km from the town center. Ecuvillens is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus routes , which run from Freiburg to Bulle or Rueyres-Saint-Laurent .

From 1913 to 1932 Ecuvillens was also connected to the public transport network by the Gleislose Bahn Freiburg – Farvagny , but the next stop was in the neighboring village of Posieux.

history

The area of Ecuvillens was settled very early, which was proven by the discovery of fragments of Roman bricks. The first written mention of the place took place in 1137 under the name Escuvilens . The spellings Scuvillens (1143), Escuvillens (1228) and Escuvilliens (1445) appeared later . The place name is derived from the personal name Skûwila and means with the suffix -ens as much as with the people of Skûwila .

In the 11th and 12th centuries, the area was the center of the powerful rule of the Lords of Glâne, whose castle is likely to be located on the La Vuerda peninsula above the Glâne. These gentlemen founded the Hauterive monastery between 1132 and 1137 shortly before the extinction of their family and furnished it with rich property.

Ecuvillens came under the rule of Freiburg in 1452 and was assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the Canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Ecuvillens and Posieux decided to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2001, the merger became legally binding. Hauterive (FR) was chosen as the new community name based on the monastery located on the valley floor of the Saane.

Attractions

A parish is mentioned shortly after the village was first mentioned in 1138. The parish church of the Assumption was rebuilt in 1811 in the neo-Romanesque style and redesigned in 1912. It has a crucifix from 1520. Several stately farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved along the village street.
