geography

Granges-Paccot lies at 620  m above sea level. M. , 2.5 km northwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The village extends on a high plateau west of the Saanegraben and north of the Lavapesson valley , on the northern outskirts of Freiburg, in the Molasse hill country of the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the municipal area of 4.0 km² comprises a section of the Molasse heights between the Sonnaz and Saane valleys . In the north-east and east, the border runs along the Saane, which is dammed up here to form the Schiffenensee and encloses the Grandfey plateau in a large arc. The Schiffenensee is cut around 70 m into the molasse layers and forms steep slopes , partly with sandstone cliffs . The high plateau adjoining to the west is divided into two parts by the valley of the Lavapesson . To the south of the valley, the communal soil extends to the height of Chamblioux ( the highest point of Granges-Paccot at 680  m above sea level ). To the north of the Lavapesson is the Granges-Paccot plateau, which slopes down towards the north to the Sonnaz valley. To the west, the area extends to the edge of the forest of the Bois de la Faye (up to 650  m above sea level ). In 1997, 26% of the municipal area was in settlements, 16% in forests and woodlands, 50% in agriculture and a little less than 8% was unproductive land.

Granges-Paccot includes the settlement of Agy ( 600  m above sea level ; also: Agiez, Agié, Agye, Azje, German Ebsachen od. Eppsachen) on the plateau west of the Saanegraben, other commercial and residential estates as well as some individual farms. The neighboring communities of Granges-Paccot are Freiburg , Givisiez , La Sonnaz and Düdingen .

population

With 3750 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Granges-Paccot is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. 76.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 14.9% German-speaking and 2.3% speak Italian (as of 2000). The population of Granges-Paccot was 180 inhabitants in 1850 and 311 in 1900. The population remained largely stable during the first half of the 20th century. Then began a marked increase in population, especially during the 1960s and since 1980 (1143 inhabitants). In the last 20 years the population has doubled.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, Granges-Paccot was predominantly an agricultural village. Since the 1950s, however, there has been a rapid development towards the agglomeration of Freiburg with large commercial and industrial areas.

Today Granges-Paccot offers around 2200 jobs. With 1% of the workforce still employed in the primary sector, agriculture only has a marginal role in the employment structure of the population. Around 19% of the workforce is employed in the industrial sector, while the service sector accounts for around 80% of the workforce (as of 2001).

Thanks to the good transport connections, Granges-Paccot is the location of three large shopping centers (furniture, electronics, sporting goods, clothing). Companies from the construction and transport industry, metal construction, telecommunications, information technology, electrical engineering, swimming pool construction and a plastering workshop are represented in the municipality. Further jobs are available in trade, administration and numerous service companies. The Forum Friborg is located in Granges-Paccot, a large exhibition, congress and concert center that opened in 1999. Since 2012, Granges-Paccot has been home to the French-speaking sports editorial office and a television studio for the Pay TV channel Teleclub .

In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. The four new residential zones are located on the western slope and north of the Chamblioux hill (with a new center of the municipality), on the eastern edge of the Bois de la Faye and the youngest in Agy south of the Lavapesson valley. The settlement and industrial areas of Granges-Paccot have grown together almost seamlessly with those of the neighboring communities of Freiburg and Givisiez.

traffic

The community has good transport links. It is located on the main road from Freiburg to Murten . The next connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey), which opened in 1971 and crosses and cuts through the municipal area along the Lavapesson valley, is around 1 km from the town center. Although the railway lines on the Friborg - Bern and Friborg - Payerne routes run through the municipality, Granges-Paccot does not yet have a stop. Granges-Paccot is connected to Freiburg by two bus lines operated by the Freiburg Transport Authority : with city bus line 9 (Freiburg train station - La Faye in Givisiez ) and city bus line 1 ( Marly - Freiburg train station - Portes de Friborg).

history

The place is mentioned in writing in 1317 under the name Grangiarum , derived from the late Latin word grangia (barn). The village initially belonged to the Lords of Englisberg, who owned a castle here. In the course of the 13th century it came to the Lords of Billens and in 1317 it came into possession of the Freiburg Citizens' Hospital. The “barns” were each named after the owner, which is why the name changed from Grange d'Englisberg to Grange de Billens . When the Paccot family took over the management of part of the hospital property in the 15th century, the name was changed to Grange à Paquot and Grange-Pacot . The current name has been documented since 1807.

In the 15th century, Granges-Paccot came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). Until 1793 the village formed a municipality with Givisiez, only afterwards it became independent. After the collapse of the Ancien Régimes (1798), Granges-Paccot belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. Granges-Paccot does not have its own (Catholic) church, it belongs to the parish of Givisiez.

A merger of Granges-Paccot, Givisiez , Corminboeuf and Chésopelloz was in preparation until 2014 under the name "2C2G" - the new place was to be called Englisbourg (after the Englisberg family, who worked in all four places). This was rejected in a referendum on March 30, 2014 by the citizens of Granges-Paccot.

Attractions

Since Granges-Paccot used to be made up of various manor houses and farmhouses, it has no historical village center - in the Route de Chantemerle, attempts have been made since 2002 to create such a central square with the appropriate infrastructure (restaurants, shops, post office, library, community administration) create. Among the mansions are those of Montenach and Grandfey from the 18th century. At Grandfey, the railway line crosses the Saanegraben on the Grandfey Viaduct , a 60 m high arched viaduct.

Sports

Granges-Paccot is the seat of Swiss Basketball , the Swiss basketball association.
