Cormagens ( Freiburger Patois ) is a town and formerly an independent political municipality in the District de la Sarine (German: Saanebezirk) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The former German name cormasing is no longer used today. On January 1, 2004, Cormagens merged with La Corbaz and Lossy-Formangueires in the new municipality of La Sonnaz .
geography
Cormagens lies at 575 m above sea level. M. , four kilometers northwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The village extends in a panoramic position on the southern slope of the Sonnaz , over its confluence with the Schiffenensee , in the Molasse hill country of the Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 1.6 km². The area reached from the Sonnaz southwards over the slope of Cormagens to the adjacent high plateau of Granges-Paccot (up to 623 m above sea level ). In the east, this high plateau slopes down to the Schiffenensee on a steep slope that is partly crossed by sandstone cliffs.
population
With 107 inhabitants (2002), Cormagens was one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. Around 20% of the population speaks German. In 1831 the village had 68 inhabitants, in 1910 123 inhabitants, but only 61 inhabitants in 1960, before a significant increase in population was recorded again. The settlement of La Sonnaz ( 536 m above sea level ) on the course of the river of the same name, shortly before its confluence with the Saane dammed up to form Schiffenensee , and several individual farms belonged to Cormagens .
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Cormagens was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including a company that produces plastic films. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.
traffic
The village has good transport links. It is only a little off the main road from Freiburg to Murten . The closest connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey) is around 1.5 km from the town center. Cormagens has no direct connection to the public transport network. The nearest train station on the Freiburg-Murten railway line is in Pensier (1 km from the village).
history
The area of Cormagens was inhabited very early, which was proven by the discovery of traces of settlement from the Mesolithic and the Neolithic . The first written mention of the place took place in 1148 under the name Cormagin . Later the names Cormargin (1294), Cormargens (1445) and Cormagens (1668) appeared. The etymology of the place name is largely in the dark.
Since the Middle Ages , Cormagens was a fiefdom of the Counts of Thierstein. Hauterive Abbey also had basic rights in the area. From 1442 at the latest, the village came under the rule of Freiburg and was assigned to the Old Landscape (Spitalpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Cormagens belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. Since 1866 the parishes of Cormagens and La Corbaz have been administered by the same council. However, the residents of Cormagens opposed a possible merger in 1981.
In the context of the municipal mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the voters of Cormagens decided on May 20, 2003 with a yes majority of 57% to merge with the municipalities of La Corbaz and Lossy-Formangueires . With effect from January 1, 2004, the merger to form the new municipality of La Sonnaz came into force.
Attractions
The Saint-Théodule chapel, which dates back to the 15th century, was moved to the village in 1844. Cormagens belongs to the parish of Belfaux .
Cormagens is also home to one of the last patrician mansions (castle, lands and forests) in the canton of Friborg. This has belonged to the old Bernese family of Kilchenmann von Oberösch for two generations . The castle and furnace house date back to the 17th century.
