Hauterive ( Ger . Altenryf ) is a municipality in the District de la Sarine (German: Saanebezirk) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . Hauterive was created on January 1, 2001 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Ecuvillens and Posieux .

geography

Hauterive lies at around 680  m above sea level. M. , 8 km southwest of the canton capital Freiburg (linear distance). The municipality extends on the Molasse plateau between the valleys of the Glâne in the west and the Saane in the east, in the Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the 11.9 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating Molasse plateau between the rivers of Glâne and Saane. Over the course of millions of years, these rivers have cut deeply into the plateau through erosion . The Saane in particular has a strongly meandering course in this area. The approximately 200 to 500 m wide flat valley floor is predominantly forested, there is little meadow and pasture land. This is followed by a 40 m to 100 m high steep slope crossed by sandstone cliffs over long stretches , which merges further to the west into an undulating plateau.

The municipal boundaries form the lower reaches of the Glâne in the west and north and the Saane in the east. The area in between includes the heights of Bois de Châtillon (up to 620  m above sea level ), Bois de Monterban ( 679  m above sea level ), Le Sapex ( 688  m above sea level ) near Posieux and from northeast to southwest the plateau of Ecuvillens. In the south-west, the municipality extends into the extensive Bois Cornard forest and reaches in the Grossa Faita at 722  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Hauterive. In 1997, 13% of the municipal area was in settlements, 30% in forests and woodlands, 55% in agriculture and a little less than 2% was unproductive land.

Hauterive consists of the districts:

  • Ecuvillens , 692  m above sea level M. , on the high plateau
  • Posieux , 676  m above sea level M. , on the edge of the high plateau above the Saane valley
  • Grangeneuve, 634  m above sea level M. , above the Saane valley
  • Hauterive , 579  m above sea level M. , monastery settlement in a loop of the river Saane
  • Le Moulin, 576  m above sea level M. , in a loop of the river Glâne
  • Le Faubourg, 695  m above sea level M. , south of Ecuvillens

Furthermore, numerous individual farms belong to the community. Neighboring municipalities to Hauterive are Villars-sur-Glâne , Marly , Arconciel , Gibloux , Cottens , Neyruz and Matran .

population

With 2,498 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Hauterive is one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. Of the residents, 86.5% speak French, 9.8% German and 1.0% speak Italian (as of 2000). The population of Hauterive was 885 in 1900. During the 20th century the population fluctuated between 950 and 1150 inhabitants. Since 1970 (1048 inhabitants) there has been a significant increase in population.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Hauterive was predominantly an agricultural community. The hydropower of the Glâne was previously used to operate several mills. Even today arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Hauterive, companies from the building trade, the electrical industry, mechanical workshops and a carpentry shop are represented. Several gravel pits and quarries (sandstone, tuff) are exploited in the municipality.

The Agricultural Institute of the Canton of Friborg and since 1974 the Federal Research Institute for Livestock Production, which was renamed Agroscope Liebefeld-Posieux (ALP) in 2004, are located in the Grangeneuve settlement . In 1949 the Ecuvillens airfield was built.

In the last few decades, Hauterive has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg region.

traffic

The community has good transport links. It is located on the old main road from Freiburg to Bulle . The next connection to the A12 motorway (Bern-Vevey), which crosses and cuts through the municipality, is around 4 km from the town center. From 1971 the autobahn from Bern ended at Posieux; it has been passable since 1981.

From 1912 to 1932, Hauterive was also connected to the public transport network by the Gleislose Bahn Freiburg – Farvagny , which was the second Swiss trolleybus operation . It was later replaced by a bus line. Today Posieux and Ecuvillens are connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus routes , which run from Freiburg to Bulle and from Freiburg to Rueyres-Saint-Laurent .

history

The municipal area of Hauterive was inhabited very early, as the numerous rocky outcrops and sandstone cliffs above the Saane and Glâne were ideally suited as prehistoric settlement points. During the Hallstatt period, Châtillon-sur-Glâne was an important trading center. Some finds are also known from Roman times .

In the 11th and 12th centuries, the area was the center of the powerful rule of the Lords of Glâne, whose castle is likely to be located on the La Vuerda peninsula above the Glâne. These gentlemen founded the Hauterive monastery between 1132 and 1137 shortly before the extinction of their family and furnished it with rich property. In doing so, they prevented their territory from falling to the Zähringer in Freiburg.

The area of today's municipality of Hauterive came under the rule of Freiburg in 1452 and was assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798) it belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before it was incorporated into the Saane district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the Canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Ecuvillens and Posieux decided to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2001, the merger became legally binding. Hauterive was chosen as the new community name as a connecting element and important monastery in the region.

Attractions

The most important attraction of the municipality is the Hauterive monastery .
