history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1137 under the name Unens . Later the names Uneins (1228) and Onens (1578) appeared. The German version of Onningen has been handed down from 1755. The place name goes back to the personal names Una or Oni and means with the suffix -ens as much as with the people of Una / Oni.

Onnens belonged to the Montagny domain in the Middle Ages . The village came under the rule of Freiburg through purchase in 1442 and was assigned to the old landscape (Neustadtpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Onnens belonged to the Friborg district during the Helvetic and the following period, before it was incorporated into the Saane district with the new cantonal constitution in 1848.

As part of the community mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the residents of Onnens, Lentigny and Lovens decided to merge their communities. With effect from January 1, 2001, the new municipality of La Brillaz was therefore formed.
