Teleclub is one of the oldest pay TV channels in Europe . The station was founded in Switzerland in 1982 and also broadcast its programs in Germany from 1984 to 1991. Teleclub can only be received in Switzerland today. Teleclub AG is wholly owned by Swisscom via its parent company CT Cinetrade .

history

In May 1982 Teleclub went on air in the Zurich cable network with a trial license and is one of the oldest pay TV channels in Europe. Initially, the broadcaster showed a feature film at 8:15 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., the monthly fee was CHF 28 . After the granting of a definitive broadcasting license , Teleclub began official operations in May 1984. The program was sent to cable networks in Switzerland, Germany and Austria via Eutelsat . The subscription price remained unchanged, but Teleclub now offered 180 first broadcasts a year, which were distributed over three to seven broadcast slots a day. The broadcast times were from Monday to Thursday 5:30 p.m. to around 11 p.m., Friday until around 0:30 a.m. On Saturdays, operations began at 3:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Between the films, Teleclub offered an extensive uncoded and therefore free program. In addition to a self-promotion program ("Info Show"), it also consisted of documentation , fun sports and comedy . By 1985 Teleclub had 40,000 subscribers in Switzerland.

From November 1, 1986 in Hanover, the program (subscription price of 29 DM per month) was broadcast locally in Germany, but by the end of 1987 it was only able to gain around 700 subscribers. Because of the low audience response, the previous shareholders Bertelsmann (30%) and Springer (30%) left Teleclub GmbH in January 1988 and left Leo Kirch with the Beta-Taurus Group responsible for the company.

Until 1987, the program was broadcast completely unencrypted via satellite . The reason: Teleclub left the choice of the encryption system to the cable network operators, which is why the transmission signal was only encrypted in the cable headend. This led u. a. In addition , Teleclub, as part of the West Reception in parts of the GDR, could be received unencrypted through antenna communities until the 1990s.

In spring 1990 Teleclub massively expanded its program in Switzerland. For the first time, the subscription price rose to CHF 30. In return, the broadcaster now showed 300 films a year and extended the broadcasting time to 14 hours a day (10:30 a.m. to around 0:30 a.m.)

At the beginning of 2006, the television broadcasting rights for the first Swiss football and ice hockey league were awarded to Cinetrade and Teleclub for the first time in Switzerland . This meant that Swiss television could only broadcast a small number of football and ice hockey games (the summaries for "Sport Aktuell" and "Sport Panorama" excluded) and that Sat.1 Switzerland could no longer broadcast any football games at all. However, Sat.1 Switzerland negotiated an agreement with Teleclub that initially authorized them to show live one Sunday encounter per week for the 2006/07 season. However, this no longer applies since the 2007/08 season. Instead, Teleclub is massively expanding its sports coverage.

In 2016 Teleclub extended the contract with the Swiss Super League . From the 2017/18 season, three new broadcast formats will complement the live broadcasts.

division

On February 28, 1991 Teleclub withdrew from neighboring countries: In Germany and Austria, the premiere started on its frequencies , Teleclub could now only be subscribed to by customers residing in Switzerland. Nevertheless, the program remained encrypted via satellite. Teleclub remained after the split 85,000 Swiss customers - how many subscribers the program has today is unclear, as no current figures have been communicated for a long time.

piracy

Teleclub has been a regular victim of piracy . As early as the mid-1980s, illegal decoders for reception via cable were being sold in Switzerland . When Teleclub encrypted its satellite signal in the late 1980s, the pirates concentrated on selling their decoders outside of Switzerland. At the beginning of the 1990s, trade magazines in Germany and Austria offered decoders for the equivalent of 100 to 200 Deutsche Mark as mass-produced goods, but there was little that could be done legally against sales in countries outside the official broadcasting area. Plug-in modules for the then common home computer Commodore 64 , so-called Teleclub cards, were also popular for decoding .

Teleclub was only able to put an end to this hustle and bustle when it changed the encryption system of its satellite signal in 1992. Teleclub could be received via satellite until 2001 (first via Astra , then via DFS-Kopernikus ). Since then, Teleclub has only been offered via cable - it is fed via a directional beam network from Swisscom . Since then, Teleclub has also been selling Sky Deutschland (formerly Premiere AG) subscriptions to owners of satellite receivers in Switzerland - but at different tariffs and with different package compositions than in Germany.

The cable network of UPC Switzerland was an exception, where Teleclub could still be received illegally . Thanks to the vulnerable encryption by the Nagra system, it was possible for owners of certain Linux set-top boxes such as B. the DM-500 and DM-800 are able to receive all channels from Teleclub. In mid-2015, UPC changed the encryption at pressure from Teleclub. The Teleclub channels can therefore no longer be received illegally. However, many stations in the TC package are also transmitted separately. These channels are not affected by the change. Own channels such as Teleclub Cinema, Sport 1, 2, 3 are not transmitted in parallel.

digitalization

Teleclub has been distributing its program digitally since May 1, 2002. The analog signal was gradually withdrawn from the cable networks. The original program is now called "Teleclub Cinema", a second channel with older films is broadcast under the name "Teleclub Star". The Teleclub digital package also currently offers 15 external channels - mostly from Sky Deutschland. The subscription fee is between 39.90 (TeleclubBasic) and 69.60 (TeleclubBasic + FamilyWorld + MovieWorld + SportsWorld) francs, depending on the package. Teleclub points out that "the Pay-Per-View channels of Sky Deutschland (Sky Select) cannot be subscribed to in Switzerland for licensing reasons".

At the same time as digitization began, a legal dispute began between Teleclub and the largest Swiss cable operator, UPC Switzerland. Initially, UPC Switzerland refused to broadcast Teleclub digitally; it was not until the end of 2002 that Teleclub was able to obtain the feed through a court decision . This court decision was later invalidated, but Teleclub digital remained connected to UPC Switzerland's networks. The dispute was rekindled when Teleclub increased its offer from 12 to 17 channels in autumn 2005. However, UPC Switzerland prevented expansion in its networks. The background to the recent dispute is also likely to be the indirect participation of Swisscom in Teleclub, which is already UPC Switzerland's largest competitor in the telephony and Internet sectors . This dispute has now been resolved so that UPC Switzerland customers can receive all 17 programs. Since July 24, 2007 the Teleclub offer can also be ordered directly via UPC Switzerland. The dispute began again when Teleclub began offering its channels in HD . For the time being, the HD offer was only made available to Swisscom TV. Since mid-2015, all channels can also be received in HD at UPC Switzerland.

In addition, the range of programs was expanded to include a total of 30 channels, eleven other sports channels and the two Disney channels Disney Junior (previously Playhouse Disney ) and Disney XD (previously Toon Disney ) for Swisscom TV customers (previously Bluewin TV). The many sports channels so that all Swiss football and hockey games can be broadcast in parallel.

Future with Swisscom

The 100 percent shareholder of Teleclub AG is CT Cinetrade AG owned by the Swiss Stephan Sager. In turn, it has been owned by Swisscom since 2005 , 75 percent since 2013 and 100 percent since 2017. CT Cinetrade AG , Palatin Media Film- & Fernseh GmbH and Arium AG each hold one third in Teleclub Programm AG . Former shareholders included the Swiss Rediffusion or the Kirch Group and, until 2012, the Swiss media company Ringier . Sager, who has been with Teleclub since the very beginning, has been said to have excellent relationships with the film studios - but he rarely appears in public and hardly ever gives interviews. In 2005 Swisscom took a stake in Cinetrade and, together with this company, operated its own IPTV service in 2006 . This was launched on November 1, 2006 as Bluewin TV and renamed Swisscom TV in November 2009 . In addition to free TV channels, this platform also broadcasts Teleclub programs and a " video on demand " offer.
