Rechthalten is located between the city of Freiburg (8 km) and the tourist town of Schwarzsee and is connected to the public transport network by a bus line ( tpf ). The area of ​​the municipality of Rechthalten totals 732 hectares, of which 130 hectares is forest.

The neighboring communities of Rechthalten are Brünisried , Giffers , Plaffeien , St. Ursen and Tentlingen .

The oldest surviving mention of the place name is found in a document dated March 21, 1142 in the Romanic form Drallaris , 1180 as Dreit Laris . The French form Dirlaret is derived from this. The German name is ironically derived from the learned form de Recto Clivo (i.e. at the straight heap ), which was documented in 1173 . In German spelling the name can be found as Rehthalton from 1250 .

These forms of name reveal the history of the place. Keeping right is a foundation of the novels. The name can be traced back to the Gallo-Roman directu laris (straight heather, fallow land heather). The Alemanni took over the area in the 11th or 12th century.

The oldest mention of the parish, which included large parts of the Sense Oberland and belonged to the old landscape (Burgpanner) of the city of Freiburg, dates back to 1228 . The age of the first church is not known, although the patronage of St. German indicates the time before the 11th century.

The participation of a "Reisgesellschaft (Compagnie) Rechthalten" of 46 equipped men is recorded for the Murtenschlacht of 1476. With the Freiburg state reform of 1831/33, the four shot of the old municipality of Rechthalten were divided into the four independent political municipalities of Rechthalten, Brünisried , Oberschrot and Zumholz . In 1848, with the new cantonal constitution, Rechthalten was incorporated into the then newly created Sense District. From an ecclesiastical perspective, the parish lasted until the end of the 19th century. Brünisried belongs to the parish of Rechthalten to this day. Since January 1, 1999, Rechthalten has also been the seat of a Reformed parish that has its church in the hamlet of Weissenstein .
