geography

Aerial photo from 100 m by Walter Mittelholzer (1919)

The place is located below Monte San Salvatore on the western side of the Melide dam , which bridges the strait between Melide and Bissone . The neighboring municipalities are Bissone, Vico Morcote , Lugano and the Italian exclave and municipality of Campione d'Italia .

history

The village is mentioned for the first time since 852; In 1482 there was a customs post there, and in the first half of the 15th century the village had to provide 5 soldiers to the Duke of Milan . In 1555 the Diet granted Melide, Bissone and Morcote a monopoly for the delivery of fish to Lugano . In 1818, after the construction of the cantonal road, under the supervision of Melide and Bissone, transport for wagons was carried out on the lake, which lasted until the opening of the 817 m long bridge at Melide (1847). The bridge tariff introduced at that time was bought back in 1853 for 12,770 Swiss francs . In 1863, the municipality was expanded to include part of the Sankt Martinsspitze as a result of a border adjustment with Italy .

In 1498 a hospital with a Church of the Holy Spirit is mentioned, which was subordinate to the Santo Spirito hospital in Sassia ( Rome ). Both were demolished in 1911 after having been deprived of their original purpose for a long time. In terms of the church, Melide first belonged to Lugano, then to Carona , in 1525 it was raised to its own parish, in 1636 it bought off its obligation to maintain the St. Lawrence Church in Lugano .
