Grancia is a municipality in the Paradiso district , in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . It has been independent since the split from Carabbia in 1825.

geography

Grancia lies in the valley of the Scairolo 5 km south of Lugano and just as far north of Morcote . The west portal of the A2 tunnel to Melide is located immediately south of the settlement area.

history

Grancia was first mentioned in a document as Grancie around 1187 . The monastery of Santa Maria in Torello (in the municipality of Carona ) had a branch chapel or church at the end of the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, large quantities of grain were stored in Grancia, which were delivered from northern Italy and processed in the mills on Scairolo. In 1608 the church of San Carpoforo separated from the parish of San Pietro in Pambio .

economy

In the 19th century the first industrial company started operations, a brick factory. Since the construction of the A2 motorway in 1966 and with the formation of the industrial zone and the construction of large tank farms towards the end of the 20th century, the community has changed significantly.
