history

The fortified tower at Casoro (La Torrazza) probably served as a high watch in the Roman-Byzantine era and later as the location of a Lombard garrison. In the Middle Ages it was probably connected to a castle that may have belonged to the de Casoro and which had already fallen into disrepair in the 15th century (today the ruins of Castellaccio). The village is listed with allodial estates and episcopal fiefdoms in the inventory of the cathedral chapter of Como 1298; the same document also mentions the church of Sant'Ambrogio, which first belonged to the parish of San Pietro in Pambio and became a sub-parish in 1591.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Roman graves were uncovered in the two hamlets of Barbengo Casoro and Cernesio. The Ambrosius Chapel is mentioned in the 15th century. In 1472 Barbengo, which until now was church dependent on Lugano, became an independent parish together with San Pietro Pambio.

Merger with Lugano

On September 30, 2007, the voters of Barbengo, Carabbia and Villa Luganese approved the incorporation of these three municipalities into the city of Lugano. The former political municipality of Barbengo has belonged to Lugano since April 20, 2008.
