Breganzona is a district of the city of Lugano in the Lugano West district , in the Lugano district in the Swiss canton of Ticino .

geography

It is located on a hill west of the core area of ​​Lugano. Until it was incorporated into the city of Lugano on April 4, 2004, it formed an independent political municipality . It included several factions and the place Biogno . The former village had 4,782 inhabitants in 2000.

The former village is located on the slope of a hill that rises from the Val d'Agno to the west, slopes towards the Cortivallo basin in the east and towards Lake Muzzano in the south .

history

Breganzona was first mentioned in 984 as Brianzona . The Milanese monastery of Sant'Ambrogio owned land here in the 12th century . The inhabitants of both villages lived from viticulture, sheep and cattle breeding, chestnut forests and silk worms. Around 1890 there were 1,500 mulberry trees.

Biogno , first mentioned in 1022, joined Breganzona in 1925, while their Mulini faction came to the municipality of Bioggio .

While Breganzona still had 883 inhabitants in 1950, from 1950 the agglomeration of Lugano saw strong growth with a population increase of 73%. The hotel offer is part of Lugano's tourist infrastructure. In terms of traffic, Breganzona was previously opened up by the Lugano trolleybus .
