The village on Lake Lugano is the most important town in the Malcantone and comprises the districts of Cassina, Mondonico and Serocca. Neighboring municipalities are Magliaso , Bioggio , Neggio , Vernate , Collina d'Oro and Muzzano .
history
735 becomes a cl. Basilice Sci. Iohannis Aniasce 'clergyman of the Church of St. John of Agno mentioned, 874 a Gundoaldus notarius de vico Amni . The place name is traced back to vulgar Latin amnius , a derivative of Latin amnis for watercourse, river, and probably refers to the Vedeggio , which flows into Lake Lugano at Agno.
The parish dates back to the 6th or 7th century and no doubt existed in the 9th century. A tradition, which still existed at the parish visit of 1684, claims that the canon monastery was founded and endowed by Emperor Otto II (HRR) (973-983) on his way to Italy.
The first document that mentions the chapter is from 1192. The first provost whose name is known was Guglielmo da Marchirolo (1288-1301). In 1591 the parish still included Magliaso, Neggio, Bioggio and Pura .
