history
Magliaso is first mentioned in 769 as Maliacis . In 854 it was mentioned as de vico Maliaci .
In the time of the Longobards, the monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia owned a farm in Magliaso. The origin of the old church of San Quirico (mentioned in 1033) and the castle of San Giorgio is not known. For almost two decades (1098–1117) Magliaso was the home of the schismatic bishop of Como , Landolfo Carcano, who was appointed bishop by Emperor Henry IV (HRR) against Pope Gregory VII . The castle was besieged and conquered by Como in 1117, Landolfo's whereabouts are uncertain, he may have been deported or murdered. This led to a ten year war between Como and Milan.
The Romanesque fresco on the south tower dates from the same period and is one of the few secular Romanesque works in Switzerland. In the 13th century the castle became the property of a branch of the Rusca family from Como. Carlo Corrado Beroldingen, Chancellor of the Bondage of Lugano, acquired sovereign rights over the village in 1668. He had built the parish church and replaced the decaying ruins of the castle with an ornate palace.
In the middle of the 19th century, a Yenish family was naturalized on the basis of the law to combat homelessness .
There used to be many isolated farms and mills along the irrigation canal, which was typical of the pre-industrial economy. The community experienced strong emigration to Lombardy , South America and, during the Second World War, to central Switzerland . The Vicinia's increasingly meager holdings were sold in 1863. At the beginning of the 21st century, large areas of the valley and along the lake were built up with residential areas. While the service sector is the most important economic sector in Magliaso, the tourist infrastructure has hardly grown. A golf course was laid out at the foot of the mountain.
