Karl Siegfried Guthke (born February 17, 1933 in Lingen (Ems) ) is a German - American studies in German .

Life

Guthke attended the Ubbo-Emmius-Gymnasium in Leer (East Friesland) . After studying English , German and philosophy in Heidelberg and at the University of Texas (degree: MA ), he received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1956 . His dissertation is entitled "The German Storm and Drang and the English Pre-Romanticism". He then taught first in Göttingen, then at the University of California (Berkeley), where he became assistant professor in 1958 and associate professor in 1959, and from 1965–1968 at the University of Toronto . In 1968 he was appointed to Harvard University , Cambridge / USA, where he has been Kuno Francke Professor of German Art and Culture since 1973.

Guthke is a member of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge / England and a former member of the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities Edinburgh, the Humanities Research Center Canberra and the Research Center Wolfenbüttel. He is also a corresponding member of the British Institute of German Studies, London. From 1971 to 1973 he was President of the Lessing Society, of which he subsequently became Honorary President.
