history

Earlier story

The Ubbo-Emmius-Gymnasium was founded in 1584 as a Latin school and is therefore the third oldest grammar school in East Frisia after the Johannes-Althusius-Gymnasium Emden and the Ulrichsgymnasium Norden and is one of the oldest schools in German-speaking countries .

Until 1970 it was exclusively a boys' high school. Girls were initially only allowed to attend school with a special permit.

Parts of the current school building date from 1909 (old building). The director's official apartment was located in a half-timbered building on the west side . In the course of the 20th century, the grammar school temporarily achieved the status of a North German teacher training and elite grammar school. During the Second World War (1939-1945) part of the building was damaged. In 1973 an expansion became necessary because the space in the school was no longer sufficient due to the increasing number of students in Leer. In addition, depending on the number of students and the school structure, other buildings in the vicinity are also used for teaching purposes.

In 1972 the high school for boys was named after Ubbo Emmius , who was the rector of the Latin school at the time from 1588 to 1596, and was opened to students of both sexes. With the introduction of the orientation level, the classes of the grammar school were extended to the 7th – 13th limited. Since 2004, the 5th grade has been the entry level again.

History since 2003

The Ubbo-Emmius-Gymnasium is a member of the MINT-EC association and a member of the funding association for gifted people in the Leer district . Due to the future-oriented, diverse and didactically successful school concept, it received the Siemens Award in 2003.

The achievements of some of the UEG students should also be mentioned. The school choir and members of the UEG symphony orchestra are regular winners of various competitions, including “ Jugend musiziert ” up to the national level. Almost every year, high school students make it to the federal level in the Mathematics Olympiad . In 2004 the homepage of the high school graduate class 2004 took first place in Lower Saxony in the Abisite contest of the magazine Der Spiegel .

The UEG works with the Teletta-Groß-Gymnasium Leer , which is in the immediate vicinity. This cooperation relates particularly to the courses offered by grammar schools in the upper level. This makes it possible to offer advanced courses that only a few students choose. The upper levels of the grammar schools are partly taught in a shared building.

In addition to the normal high school profile, the grammar school offers special offers for its students. In the bilingual train , students are taught geography and biology in English. Students in the music branch receive special music lessons in addition to their normal education. There is also the possibility of taking part in history lessons in English.

The UEG maintains a regular student exchange with the Lycée Aristide-Briand in France ( Évreux ), the Shawnee Heights Highschool in the USA ( Topeka / Kansas ), the Ye Qianyu Junior Middle School in China ( Tonglu ) and the Christelijk Gymnasium Beyers Naudé in the Netherlands ( Leeuwarden ).

In 2014 the Ubbo-Emmius-Gymnasium was awarded the title "European School", which expresses the school's focus on European and international cooperation, student exchange programs and project participation.

In 2005 the school newspaper Tacheles of the UEG was named one of the best school newspapers in Germany. In a nationwide music project, the eleventh grade music course was among the top 30.
