Association of mathematical and scientific excellence centers in schools
The Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers in Schools e. V. (abbreviated MINT-EC ) is a non-profit association based in Berlin . The association was founded in 2000 on the initiative of the Federal Association of German Employers' Associations (BDA) and has been protected by the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) since October 15, 2009.
aims
The aim of the association MINT-EC is to students for STEM subjects M athematics, I nformatik, N aturwissenschaften and T to inspire technic and to promote them in it. Since girls are traditionally underrepresented in this area, special attention is paid to addressing schoolgirls as well.
A selection process allows schools with upper secondary level II to become part of the national Excellence School Network MINT-EC. The schools receive support and funding from a network of companies, research institutions, universities and associations, with strengthening the MINT subjects being the common goal of all actors.
The MINT-EC association, together with its partners, offers events for schoolchildren, teachers and management level and networks the schools with partners from business and science.
The selection process
Schools with upper secondary level and at which it is possible to acquire the university entrance qualification and / or technical college entrance qualification can take part in the MINT-EC selection process . It takes place annually. Criteria for selecting a school as a MINT-EC school include:
- Proven MINT focus in the school program
- Continuous offer of STEM advanced courses or equivalents
- Promotion of the gifted
- Extracurricular cooperation, for example with universities and companies
- Interdisciplinary approaches in the MINT area
- Special address for girls
- Career orientation
- Teacher training
These criteria serve as a rough guide for certifying a school as a MINT-EC school. What is required, however, is that the future concepts are built on an already considerable basis of structures, processes and resources, or that they fit in there.
In a first selection process, 34 schools across Germany were selected in the year it was founded. The national Excellence School Network MINT-EC currently comprises 323 schools in Germany and abroad. There are MINT-EC schools in all 16 federal states, there is also the İstanbul Lisesi in Turkey, the Bundes- und Bundesrealgymnasium Gmunden in Austria, the German International School Washington DC ., The German School Quito in Ecuador and the Ellinogermaniki Agogi in Pallini , Greece as German schools abroad.
After four years of membership, the MINT-EC schools are obliged to apply to maintain membership. If the recertification is successful, the membership is extended for a further four years.
MINT-EC school cloud with the Hasso Plattner Institute Potsdam
The Hasso Plattner Institute , the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and MINT-EC are jointly implementing the school cloud pilot project. The school cloud is intended to help replace the maintenance-intensive computer cabinets in schools in the long term and provide all those involved in the school - pupils, teachers, school administration and management, parents - with simple and secure access to digital educational, cooperation and organizational offers via the Web and from any display device.
The school cloud is a comprehensive and integrative solution that does not reinvent or replace existing approaches and solutions from schools and providers, but rather networks them centrally and thus makes them available to a larger group of users.
The school cloud is not a finished product, but is developed jointly with the help of feedback from the schools involved.

In terms of content and organization, the association works closely with the Science on Stage Germany association in an office community .
