history

The association in its current form was formed in 2003 from the German organizing committee of the European initiative "Science on Stage", which was run by the seven largest research organizations ( European Space Agency (ESA) , CERN , Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) , ESRF , ESO , EFDA , European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) ; merged in EIROforum) at EU level.

In terms of content and organization, the association works closely with the Association for Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers in Schools (MINT-EC) in an office community . In 2010 Science on Stage Germany was recognized as a place of ideas by the initiative Germany - Land of Ideas . In 2012 the non-profit association Science on Stage Europe eV was founded, of which Science on Stage Germany is a member alongside more than 30 other nations.

aims

The aim of the association is to enable teachers of the natural sciences, technology and IT to exchange ideas with colleagues in Germany and Europe. Teachers exchange teaching concepts and materials during activities of the association and network. This is intended to improve teaching in the MINT subjects and promote the next generation. Teachers can apply to participate in various activities.

  • National Science on Stage Festival : To select the German delegation for the European festival, Science on Stage Germany holds a national festival every two years. Around 100 German teachers from all over Germany present their projects there at stands.

  • Teacher projects : Teachers from different countries develop unusual teaching concepts in international working groups. These are published in the form of free brochures (previously published: Teaching Science in Europe 1-3, iStage 1: Information and communication technologies (ICT) in the natural sciences, lantern moon and hot ears, iStage 2: Smartphones in science lessons, iStage 3: Football in STEM lessons, Lilus Haus - language training with experiments, coding in STEM lessons)

Science on Stage Festival

The European festival for STEM teachers takes place every two years at different locations. Around 350 teachers from 25 countries come together there to present innovative teaching ideas and new teaching approaches at stands, in workshops and on the stage. The next European festival will take place from March 24-27, 2022 in Prague, Czech Republic. The selection of participating teachers takes place in each country in a separate national selection process. The German delegation will be determined at the festival, which will take place from November 13th to 15th, 2020 in Karlsruhe.

The last European Science on Stage Festival took place from October 31 to November 3, 2019 in Cascais, Portugal. The host was Science on Stage UK. Further Science on Stage festivals took place in 2015 in London, 2013 in Słubice / Frankfurt (Oder), 2011 in Copenhagen and 2008 in Berlin.

Teaching material

Science on Stage Germany offers multilingual teaching materials for teachers from pre-school to upper secondary level. The materials and brochures have been developed by teachers for teachers from different European countries. The teaching materials are available to teachers to download and can be ordered free of charge.

Evaluation

Between 2008 and 2012 Tanja Tajmel and Ingo Salzmann from the Humboldt University in Berlin carried out an evaluation study on Science on Stage. The results of the evaluation show that the initiative contributes to an active European exchange of educational concepts.

The results show: Around 80 percent of the participants in Science on Stage events put the teaching ideas they saw into practice. Around 70 percent of the teachers stated that they gained more motivation and joy in their job after participating. Not only suggestions, international contacts are also valued and cultivated by the educators. Every second participant has also implemented ideas that they have collected at Science on Stage in advanced training events and thus contributed to their dissemination.
