Ubbo Emmius
Ubbo Emmius (born December 5, 1547 in Greetsiel , † December 9, 1625 in Groningen ) was an Evangelical Reformed theologian , historian , educator and founding rector of the University of Groningen ( Netherlands ).
Life
Ubbo Emmius was born in Greetsiel in 1547 as the son of the Lutheran pastor Emme Dyken and his wife Elke Tjarda, the mayor's daughter from Norden (East Friesland) . He attended the Latin school in Emden and then the illustrious grammar school in Bremen . Two more years of training at the North Latin School (East Friesland) followed. In 1570 Emmius studied at the University of Rostock , where the historian David Chyträus had a lasting influence on him. In 1574 he had to return to Greetsiel due to the death of his father.
Two years later he left the East Frisian fishing village and walked south. On his hike along the Rhine he made stops in Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau , visited the grave of his role model Erasmus von Rotterdam in Basel and finally came to Geneva, his second place of study . “Here he witnessed the theological party chaos, which in endless battles led to the definitive rift between Lutherans and Reformed; In this city, where humanism was given the new, Reformation line, it found its fixed stand, both religious and political. "
In 1578 he returned to East Frisia . In the north, he was offered a parish office and rectorate of the Latin school as an alternative. He decided to teach and was rector of his former training facility, which is now called Ulrichsgymnasium , for nine years . In 1587 he fell victim to the religious dispute of the East Frisian count family and moved to Leer in 1588 , where he was also rector of the Latin School, today's Ubbo-Emmius-Gymnasium .
In 1596 he followed a call to Groningen and in 1614 became the founding rector of the local University of Groningen . In December 1625 he died very old.
Ubbo Emmius was married twice. In 1581 he married his first wife Theda Tjabbern (1544–1583) from the north, a relative of Emden's mayor Onno Tjabbern . After her death he married Margaretha van Bergen (1566–1636) in 1586 . Of the children only two survived the father: the daughter Elisabeth (died 1629) and his son Wessel Emmius (1589–1654), who later became a preacher in Groningen.
Works
Much of his scientific work relates to the religious and political disputes of his time. From the Netherlands he waged a written battle against the Lutheran court party in Aurich and the absolute princely rule in East Friesland. His educational books and writings were burned in public.
His most famous works are the Rerum Frisicarum historiae libri 60 , "the sixty books of Frisian history", provided with a detailed map of East Frisia. His political writings and correspondence with the leading men of his time, in which he represented the right of the people to resist the authorities, mark him as a forerunner of parliamentarism and revolutionary law , from which a direct line to Jean-Jacques Rousseau and into the French Revolution leads.
