The Mathematics Olympiad in Germany ( MO for short , officially only known as the Mathematics Olympiad ) is a nationwide student competition in Germany in the subject of mathematics .

procedure

The nationwide competition is divided into several rounds and is aimed at students in grades 3–13.

The school, regional and state round

The organization and implementation of the first to third round is the responsibility of representatives in the federal states. In each round, separated according to grade level, tasks from different areas of mathematics are worked on, the level of which increases from round to round. The best in each case qualify for the next round. Well over 200,000 students take part in the school round every year.

The federal round

Teams with nine to fifteen students from grade 8 from all federal states are invited to the national round in May or June. However, students from grade 7 can participate as "early starters" and are then rated as eighth graders. Since 2014, five guests from German schools abroad have also been among the participants.

On two days, three tasks are worked on in four and a half hour exams. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in a ratio of 1: 2: 3, with 40% of the students receiving a prize. Students who narrowly missed this will be honored with recognitions. Prize winners of the federal round from grades 9 to 11, as well as particularly good prize winners from grade 8, qualify for the selection exams for the selection competition for the International Mathematical Olympiad , which will take place in December following the federal round.

The federal round takes place every year in a different federal state. The venues of the federal round since 1991:

history

The first mathematics Olympiad in the GDR took place in 1961/62 as the "Young Mathematicians Olympics". Since then there have been school and district Olympics from the 5th grade, district Olympics from the 7th grade and GDR Olympics from the 10th grade, in which so-called early starters from lower grades also took part. The GDR exit took place in the week before Easter each year in the youth college "Wilhelm Pieck" near Berlin, later in May in Erfurt. For the pupils in the 1st to 4th grades there was a preparatory one-stage so-called ABC Olympiad organized by the ABC newspaper . There were math circles to support gifted students at all levels. A large proportion of the participants in the GDR Olympiads came from the mathematically oriented special schools and special classes at universities or colleges.

After the reunification of Germany, the Mathematics Olympiad quickly developed into a nationwide school competition. Since 1994 the Mathematik-Olympiaden eV has been the sponsor of the competition, which is advertised annually in cooperation with the Talent Promotion Center Education & Talent . All 16 federal states have been taking part in the federal round since 1996.
