Student competitions are competitions that give students the opportunity to demonstrate their exemplary skills in a specific area or on a specific topic.

School competitions in Germany

In Germany , numerous school competitions are organized by various organizations. Juries decide which applicants will be awarded prizes according to specific criteria . Depending on the competition, awards take the form of cash or material prizes or recognition, e.g. B. by participating in high-profile events.

Student competitions are advertised either nationwide or for a specific federal state. There are also international tenders.

In contrast to school competitions, in which pupils can participate, school competitions are aimed at schools as a whole. The focus is on programs, profiles, organization, school culture and school development .

To promote the educational aspects of school competitions, some organizers have come together to form a working group for nationwide school competitions .

School competitions are organized by

  • University teachers, teachers or student teachers

Didactic and educational concepts

Student competitions are suitable to motivate students and teachers for learning projects and achievements in a certain area or on a certain topic. Regardless of winning a prize, mere participation is in many cases a gain: in the form of an increase in knowledge, through the joy of learning, positive group dynamic processes in community efforts and the feeling of having mastered such a challenge.

Student competitions are geared to varying degrees to content (output) or processes of student performance or learning projects. Especially in projects, the processes are taken into account when evaluating student projects and achievements. that is, the way in which results were produced plays an important role.

In 2007, due to the variety and different quality of pupil and school competitions, a “competitive pedagogy” was called for, which is intended to provide an orientation framework for pupils and schools. This led to a decision by the KMK , which defined various quality criteria. In the appendix there is a list of particularly recommended competitions . During the competitions, care should be taken to ensure that the school's educational mission is supported and that the subject matter is deepened. They should be suitable for stimulating cross-border quality processes. In addition to the competition with the other participants, the exchange between them should also be promoted. In competitions for younger students (Sek 1), the main focus is on motivation and personal success regardless of placement. Strict data protection should apply and no entry fee should be charged. The process according to the announcement must be guaranteed by the carrier, this includes confirmation of receipt of the submissions and information on returns, prices and intermediate stops as well as information about the performance at pupils, schools and ministries of culture and an independent jury. Recommended competitions are only those that are permanent, are privately owned, advertised nationwide and have been carried out at least 3 times in more than half of the countries. An independent body supports the technical and educational quality. After this decision, the list of recommended competitions was not continued.

In 2012, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) decided on a recommendation for the recognition and evaluation of learning outside of the curriculum in lower secondary level (in particular internship and competitive performance), which enables teachers to evaluate outside of school performance. Recognition as a subject grade, partial grade or certificate is recommended to the federal states.

Switzerland

In order to promote new forms of learning and highlight the strengths of the students, a series of school competitions are held in Switzerland every year. The most important among them are:

  • MoneyFit - PostFinance financial education competition for children and young people from 9 to 19 years of age.
  • bugnplay - digital youth competition for games, code, robotics and multimedia for children and teenagers from 8 to 20 years.
  • myclimate - the myclimate energy and climate workshop is a Switzerland-wide student project competition for schools and companies.

United States

In the USA , many school districts organize a science fair every year , in which pupils of all grades (from kindergarten to 12th grade) can present an experiment or exhibit - mostly scientific, less often social science. Many schools also take part in the National Robotics Challenge , a technology competition in which students try to construct a robot from predetermined parts that can perform certain operations. Also widespread are math contests ( math contests , math olympiads ) and the Robotics Challenge- related programs First Lego League and First Tech Challenge .

One institution traditionally represented at many US high schools and colleges are debating clubs , whose members compete against debating clubs in other schools ( competitive debate ). Spelling Bees , formalized spelling competitions in which children compete against each other from elementary school onwards to correctly spell (difficult) English words, are also popular in US schools .

Art competitions are often held at the school district level.
