Reading competition

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The reading competition has been organized annually since 1959 by the German Book Trade Association . It takes place in cooperation with libraries , schools , bookshops and other cultural institutions. The reading competition is one of the largest nationwide competitions for schoolchildren . Every year a total of almost 700,000 6th grade students from around 7,500 schools take part.

Participation and procedure

6. School classes from secondary schools can take part. The best readers will initially be determined in a class competition from October. The school winner is then determined in a school competition in November / December.

The school winners of a district or an independent city compete in a public event for the title of city or district winner (February). The city or district winners meet at the district level (March / April), then at the state level (May) and finally at the federal level (June).

Until 2012, the school winners were divided into three groups:

  • In group C there were schools with a special focus on learning. Since there was only a weak participation in group C, the competition ended for the participants at the district or city level. The exceptions were Schleswig-Holstein, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, where Group C went up to the state decision. In Rhineland-Palatinate, special needs schools also went through to the federal decision from 2009 to 2012. This was done at the request of the district administrator of the Mainz-Bingen district, Claus Schick .

However, this regulation no longer applies since 2012.
