from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierre Félix Masseau , called Fix-Masseau (born March 17, 1869 in Lyon , † April 1937 in Paris ) was a French sculptor, painter and medalist of Art Nouveau and Symbolism . He was the father of Pierre Fix-Masseau , with whom he is often confused.

Life

Fix-Masseau studied from 1886 to 1889 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon with Charles Dufraine , then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Gabriel Jules Thomas . In 1897 he won the Prix de Paris and with it a travel grant that took him to the Netherlands , Switzerland , Belgium and Italy (eight months in Florence ). After the First World War, he became director of the École Nationale d'Art Décoratif in Limoges (until 1935) and curator at the Musée Adrien Dubouché . In 1926 he was appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honor . From 1904 to 1920 he was a member of the Société des Artistes français on the jury of the Paris Salon .

His first work in the Paris Salon aroused the interest of numerous visitors, including Auguste Rodin , who tried unsuccessfully to engage Fix-Masseau for his studio. Fix-Masseau was best known for his portrait busts and statuettes of famous personalities, which he executed in marble, plaster, wood and bronze. In addition, he also created allegorical and symbolist subjects, as well as some monuments (including Monument César Franck in Liège ). As a painter, Fix-Masseau concentrated on landscapes and still lifes with flowers and fruits. He is particularly known for his handicrafts, which he carried out in ceramics, pewter and bronze, among other things.

His works can now be found in the Musée d'Orsay and the Petit Palais in Paris, the Albertinum in Dresden and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon.
