Juvenes Translatores
Juvenes Translatores (Latin for "young translators") is a translation competition for secondary school students in the European Union . It has been organized annually since 2007 by the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission .
aims
The "Juvenes Translatores" competition aims to focus on the following aspects:
- learning foreign languages
- the multilingualism
- the job of a translator
The aim of the competition is to sensitize young people to the fact that a command of foreign languages is essential for communication in Europe and for a better mutual understanding. At the same time, it illustrates that our foreign language skills must be expanded if we are to preserve linguistic diversity in Europe and promote multilingualism . In this context, the profession of translator is also advertised.
Basic rules
Juvenes Translatores takes place annually and is aimed at young people who will turn 17 in the year of the competition. In 2014, students born in 1997 can participate. The task is to translate a page of text from one of the 24 official EU languages into another, with 552 language combinations theoretically possible. Only dictionaries are allowed as aids, no computers or other electronic devices. Schools in the EU Member States can enroll up to five students of any nationality. The number of eligible schools (751 in total) depends on the number of seats that each country has in the European Parliament .
