Yohanan Bader ( Hebrew יוחנן בדר; * August 19, 1901 in Krakow ; † June 16, 1994 ) was an Israeli politician from Poland who was elected as a member of the first Knesset in 1949 and was a member until 1977.

Life

After the conclusion of the State High School in Krakow studied Bader Law at the city's Jagiellonian University and graduated with a doctorate to the Dr. jur. from. He then worked as a lawyer . Bader, who was already involved in the Jewish Socialist Party, the General Jewish Workers' Union and the socialist - Zionist scout organization Hashomer Hatzair during his studies , joined the revisionist Zionist movement in 1925 and was also the editor of the Polish- language weekly newspaper Trybuna Narodowa .

After the attack on Poland began in September 1939, he moved to eastern Poland , which was occupied by the Soviet Union . Because of his continued political commitment, Bader was arrested in 1940 and sentenced to hard labor in northern Russia. After he was released in 1941 under the provisions of the Soviet-Polish Agreement , he left the Soviet Union and joined the Anders Army in August 1942 .

In December 1943 his immigration ( Aliyah ) took place in the League of Nations mandate area Palestine , where he joined the underground organization Irgun Tzwa'i Le'umi . Because of this activity, he was arrested by British Mandate troops in 1945 and imprisoned in the Latrun camp until May 1948 . After his release from prison, he was one of the founders of the revisionist-Zionist Cherut alongside Menachem Begin and was also the editor of their daily newspaper Cherut .

After the establishment of the State of Israel, Bader was elected for the first time as a member of the Knesset on February 14, 1949 and was a member of the Knesset as a representative of the Cherut until January 21, 1974 and then until the end of the eighth legislative period as a representative of the Likud on June 13, 1977 on.

During his long membership in parliament Bader was a member of several Knesset committees and between 1957 and 1977 spokesman for economic policy for the Cherut faction . In addition, he was from November 1965 to November 1969 coordinator of the parliamentary alliance of Cherut and Liberals and most recently between January 1974 and June 1977 chairman of the Knesset Committee on State Control.

Bader, who wrote articles about his parliamentary experiences in daily newspapers such as Cherut , Maariw, and HaYom , published his memoir in 1979 under the title The Knesset and Me .
