François Andréossy (born June 10, 1633 in Paris , † June 3, 1688 in Castelnaudary ) was a French engineer , topographer and cartographer , whose family originally came from the Italian city of Lucca .

Life

In 1650 he drew a relief map of the city of Nantes . In 1660 he traveled to Italy ( Lombardy and Padua ) and studied there especially canals and locks . On his return he hired Pierre-Paul Riquet and later became his right-hand man in the construction of the Canal du Midi (construction began in 1666). Andréossy distinguished himself above all as a civil engineer and specialist in hydraulics and also brought his cartography skills to bear. The Canal du Midi occupied him until his death, and so did his descendants. His great-grandson, General Antoine-François Andréossy , in his work Histoire du Canal du Midi, took the view that his ancestor should be regarded as the "father of the canal" instead of Pierre-Paul Riquet.
