Basin of the Canal du Midi in Castelnaudary

Castelnaudary ( Occitan : Castèlnau d'Ari ) is a French commune with 11,598 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region . It belonged to the former French province of Lauragais , the center of the Cathars . The inhabitants call themselves Chauriens or Castelnaudariens.

geography

The city lies at an average altitude of 165  m and is crossed by the Canal du Midi . There used to be a large shipyard with a dry dock here .

history

During the Albigensian Crusade , Simon IV. De Montfort was besieged in Castelnaudary in 1211 by the Counts of Toulouse and Foix .

The 4th Regiment of the Foreign Legion (French: 4ème Régiment Etranger (4e RE) ) has been stationed in Castelnaudary since 1977 (until 1980: Régiment d'Instruction de la Légion Etrangère (RILE) ). This is where the basic training of all new legionnaires as well as various further training courses (e.g. NCO courses) take place. It is a pure training regiment.
