Since canons from Narbonne appropriated some of the Albigensian properties in the region, the place was called Villeneuve les Chanoines for a while .

Attractions

  • A round tower has been preserved from the castle ( château ) from the 13th century.
  • A windmill ( Moulin á vent Bénazet ) from 1819, about one kilometer west of the town center , which was in operation until the end of the 19th century, was restored in 2001 and can be visited. It is the only working windmill in the whole department.
  • The remains of two dolmens ( La Jargantière or Vieil Homme or Palet de Roland and the Dolmens de Jappeloup or Bel Soleil ) can be found on hikes in the vicinity (approx. 3.5 kilometers ). The dolmen ( de Traoucadou and de Fados ) are a bit dilapidated.
  • There are also some arched stone huts made of dry masonry ( cabanes or capitelles ) with wooden beams on the inside , which were built by (wine) farmers to protect against wind and rain; Sometimes the farmers also stayed overnight in the stable accommodation for several nights to protect their fields from wild boars or harvest thieves.
