In the first half of the 19th century the place always had around 400 inhabitants. Due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the population has since declined to the lowest levels since the 1950s. Due to the proximity to Carcassonne and the significantly lower land or real estate prices in the country, there has been a slight increase in population over the past few decades.

economy

In earlier times, the residents of the village lived largely on self-sufficiency from agriculture, with both grain and wine being grown. In addition, they ran a little cattle (pigs, chickens, etc.). On the slopes of the hill there are fruit trees and vegetable gardens. As in many places in Languedoc , viticulture has dominated since the 19th century; In the vicinity of the village are the buildings of a regional wine cooperative ( Cave Coopérative du Razès ), which markets its wines through the appellations Aude , Pays Cathare , Malepère and Pays d'Oc . Because of the sales crisis for French wines, grain ( wheat , maize ) and sunflowers are being sown again in many areas . Tourism in the form of the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) has also played an important role in the income of the population and the community since the 1960s.

history

The place name La Serra is first mentioned in the 11th century; since 1226 the place belonged to the manorial rule ( seigneurie ) of the Sénéchaussée of Carcassonne. Later he came to only four kilometers away Dominicans - Monastery Prouille at Fanjeaux .

Attractions

  • The old town center belongs to the type of Circulades - round villages that were built around a core consisting of a castle and / or church for defense reasons and whose outer house front served as a replacement for an expensive city wall. A second (outer) ring of houses has not been completed.
  • The simple late Gothic church ( Église Saint-Étienne ) dates from the 14th century; For once , it is not in the center of the circulade , but is part of the closed ring of houses. The church building was redesigned in the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Then as now, a small gate ( Portail de la Ville ) is the only access to the central square.
