The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to job losses as a result of the mechanization of agriculture .

economy

As in large parts of the Minervois, viticulture (see Minervois (AOC) ) also plays a major economic role in Laure. There are several wineries ( châteaux or domaines ) that also organize wine tastings ( dégustations ). From spring until well into autumn, tourism contributes to the municipality's income in a variety of ways (rental of holiday apartments, etc.). Smaller craft and service companies of all kinds also benefit from this.

history

Although the area was already settled in Roman and Gallo-Roman times, the name Lauranus is mentioned for the first time in 875. At that time much of the land belonged to the Abbeys of Caunes and Lagrasse . In the High Middle Ages - during the feudal period - the lands became the property of secular aristocratic families : In Laure, for a long time these were the Seigneuers de Lauran , who loyally sided with the king and the church during the Albigensian Wars .

Attractions

Several sights of the place and its surroundings are classified as Monument historique :

Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste ; in front of it the weighing house
  • Several towers have been preserved from the medieval city fortifications ( remparts ): the crenellated Tour du Portail-Neuf and the now crenellated Tour du Bas . The Tour de Mézolieux is also worth mentioning. Some of them have been on the list of Monuments historiques since the 1920s .
  • The large single-nave parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste with an almost 16-meter-wide main nave and side chapels was built in the first half of the 14th century - recognizable by its Gothic shape. The nave is illuminated by a west rose and the windows in the side chapels. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 2006 .
  • A weighing house from the end of the 19th century has also been preserved; it is very close to the church. Here, on market days, the traders' weights and scales were checked and thus calibrated, so to speak; animals and heavy loads could also be weighed here.
  • In the village there is a baroque fountain ( Fontaine du Ravelin ) with a beautifully curved tracery crown .

  • In the Minervois there are surprisingly many testimonies from the time of the megalithic culture (approx. 3000–4000 BC), the gallery grave of the Allée couverte of Saint-Eugène on the Domaine de Russol is one of the largest. The capstones of the passage grave have been lost over the millennia. The gallery tomb has been classified as a monument historique since 1931 .
  • In the area, v. a. in the west of the village, about 30 capitelles or cabanes are still preserved - stone huts made of dry stone , which were mainly used to accommodate the field guards before the grape harvest. Although their origins certainly go back a long way, most are only around 150 to 300 years old. There are several signposted trails for hikers ( Sentiers des Capitelles ).
