The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms. In the last few decades, however, the population situation in the small town has stabilized.
economy
The place has centuries of tradition in viticulture. Both red and rosé wines ( Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Syrah ) and white wines ( Chardonnay , Sauvignon , Vionnier ) are pressed . There are different options for a wine tasting ( degustation ). Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has played an important role in the local economy since the middle of the 20th century.
history
Although the place was already settled in Gallo-Roman times, the place probably only came into being around the year 1000, when a castrum , the forerunner of today's castle, was built. In the 12th century the area belonged to the Counts of Minerve , who lost their possessions during the Albigensian Wars because they were on the losing side. After that there were constantly changing masters until King Henry IV established a barony in Rieux in 1604 . In the time of Louis XIII. and of his chancellor Richelieu , the Count of Rieux again turned himself on the wrong side and was killed in the battle of Castelnaudary (1632); the county of Rieux lost its barony status and the castle was largely destroyed. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the place belonged to the Moustiers-Mérinville family.

Others
- Some houses in the old town center ( Rue Dalmace ) still convey a medieval flair.
- Parts of the medieval defensive wall have also been preserved.
- In several places in the village there are scallops as ornament on house facades - an indication that Rieux was formerly on a byway of the Way of St. James ( Via Tolosana ).
- The medieval castle ( château ) is located outside the village on a rocky hill on the north side of the Argent-Double. It was expanded and rebuilt several times before it was largely destroyed in the 17th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, some houses were built into the middle of the building complex, but the privately owned complex was declared a monument historique in 1997 .
- The Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont chapel is located near the old bridge over the Argent-Double and was intended to provide protection from all evils (plague, shipwreck, etc.).
- An old granary ( silo ) was recognized as a monument historique in 1963 .
