In the 19th century the place always had between 350 and 450 inhabitants. Despite the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs, the number of inhabitants has hardly declined in the 20th century. In the last few decades it has even risen sharply, which is primarily due to the significantly lower property prices and rents compared to the nearby city of Carcassonne.
economy
Despite its proximity to Carcassonne, the area around the town is still characterized by agriculture - especially viticulture. Ventenac is now allowed to market its wines under the Cabardès (AOC) quality label.
history
No information is available on the history of the place. The existence of an early medieval church and a medieval castle, however, suggests settlement going back a long way.
Attractions
- The hill of Ventenac is crowned by the nearly 20 meter high defense tower ( Donjon ) of the medieval, later largely renovated castle ( Château de l'Abbé ), which is privately owned. The Donjon was also recognized as a Monument Historique in 1951 because of a late Gothic window that was added later .
- There was a church in Ventenac as early as the 10th century, but nothing has survived. Today's parish church is a simple building in Gothic style from the 15th century.
- In the surrounding vineyards there are several stone huts ( capitelles ) made of dry stone , which in earlier times served the winemakers as weather protection during the grape harvest, but primarily as a guard house to ward off uninvited nighttime visitors.
- There are several stone and wrought iron crosses in and around the village.
