Conques-sur-Orbiel ( Occitan : Concas ) is a southern French municipality with 2525 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitania region .

location

Conques-sur-Orbiel is located on the Orbiel river in the southern foothills of the Montagne Noire at an altitude of about 125 meters above sea level. d. M. and about ten kilometers (driving distance) northeast of Carcassonne .

In the 19th century the place always had between 1,550 and 1,780 inhabitants. Despite the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs, the population remained largely stable between 1,300 and 1,500 in the first half of the 20th century. In the last few decades, however, it has increased significantly again, which is primarily due to the significantly lower land prices and rents compared to the nearby city of Carcassonne.

Despite its proximity to Carcassonne, the area around the town is still characterized by agriculture - especially viticulture, which Cabardès may have been doing in ancient times. Conques is one of the 14 communities that are allowed to market parts of their wine under the Cabardès (AOC) quality label.

history

In a rock cave ( abri ) called Font-Juvénal , prehistoric finds from around 5000 BC were found. Made. In the year 794 an abbey Saint-Laurent is mentioned for the first time, which later disappeared again, but was identified as belonging to the place Conques. The first mention of the place name Conchas comes from the 12th century. In the course of the Albigensian Crusades (1209-1229) the place passed into royal possession and was fortified accordingly. In the 17th and 18th centuries there were several water mills and cloth weaving mills in the village, which already had 1,537 inhabitants in the first census in France in 1793.

Attractions

  • The single-aisled parish church of the village ( Église Sainte-Foy ) , built mainly from rubble stones, dates from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century. Despite its massive and rustic appearance, it is an early Gothic church whose imposing crenellated bell tower towers over the place. The transept and three apses were added in the 14th century. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1913 .
  • The so-called Château des Saptes , located outside the village, dates from the 16th century. At first glance it almost looks like a sacred building; However, it served the builders, the Saptes brothers, as a huge hall for their cloth manufacture. In the years 1683–1689 an upper floor was added and the two round stair towers added, so that the castle-like character of the building was created. A small chapel is built on the south side. It is still privately owned and partially functions as a winery; it was classified as a Monument historique in 1948 .
  • A house ( Maison Fraisse ) from the 16./17. Century has also been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 . It is privately owned.
  • In the vineyards there are more than 40 round but also square stone huts made of dry stone masonry ( capitelles ), which can be explored on four signposted circular hiking trails. Up until the early 20th century, the buildings were mainly used shortly before the grape harvest as guard houses to ward off uninvited evening or nighttime visitors (birds, wild animals and people). Their roofs are not arched, but are supported inside by crossing branches. Three of these buildings that look so old and primal are dated: 1875, 1877 and 1880.
